BANGKOK (NNT) - Adjustments will be made to the blueprint of the Eastern Expansion project to increase the handling capacity of Suvarnabhumi airport.

 

The government held a committee meeting that oversees the airport’s capacity expansion project on Wednesday (July 6). The gathering was presided over by Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who was joined by Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob and representatives from related agencies such as the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning.

 

One of the main agendas of the meeting was the discussion on the adjustments to the blueprint of the East Expansion project. The revision will expand the eastern section of the airport’s main terminal, allowing the area to accommodate up to 15 million passengers a year.

 

The plan will be revised to reflect the current situation and is expected to be completed by December 2022 before being proposed to the cabinet for consideration at the start of next year. Construction is expected to begin in the middle of 2023 and take roughly 29 months to complete, with a total cost of around 7.8 billion baht.

 

The expansion of this particular section alone is expected to increase the airport’s overall handling capacity to 65 million passengers per year when it is completed in 2025.

65 million seems pretty optimistic considering they seem to think they must have various schemes to get tourists (high quality only, at that) to come here.

 

And then, there's the state of things in the world, which would lead anyone with an intact cortex to stave off spending right now....

Welcome to Thailand where talk is plentiful and action is minimal........

Think I wait and see how tourism pans out post pandemic first. Thailand I do not think will get back to pre-pandemic tourism for 5-10 years or more - for various reasons - fear of covid closures and getting stuck and booking nearer to home, used up savings, Thai yoyo'ing , airline planning and costs , etc, etc. 

 

The Thai belief in this - and malls - of build it and they will come is way out of kilter with reality - as normal.

 

 

 

 

Take note, the committee is chaired by non other than the man whose family controls a large construction company, the same company that delivered the monstrous new parliament building that is shoddily built, floods frequently and was delivered years late and hugely over budget. Wanna guess which company will get the lead contract for this extension?

Personally I think they should think of a third airport to take the strain off infrastructure in Bangkok.

Maybe one west of Bangkok which could serve as a gateway north south east and west.

This is in contrast to when they grossly under-estimated the capacity needed for Suvarnabhumi when it was constructed and very quickly had to re-open the old airport to deal with the overcrowding. At the same time, they are assuming that passenger numbers will keep increasing, and that is by no means a given.

Airport was over capacity when it opened in September 2006. What I want to know is where is the third runway ?  They supposedly have space for 4 but a third runway would be a primary part of any expansion.
