Soldiers killed, set on fire

TWO soldiers were killed and their bodies burnt beyond recognition today in an attack by separatist insurgents in Thailand's strife-torn Muslim south, local police said.

The men were patrolling by motorcycle in Narathiwat province when a group of militants opened fire on them, police in the region said.

The insurgents then stole the soldiers' weapons and set the bodies on fire, they said.

Separatist violence in Thailand's far south erupted in January 2004, and more 2300 people have been killed in almost daily violence.

Killings are also becoming more gruesome, with insurgents occasionally beheading their victims or burning their bodies.

The key point about this, is that the situation has deteriorated to the point that incidents like this do not make headline news now. Thais expect killing, maimings and burnings in the South, in the same way that all over the world, people expect another car bomb in Bahgdad.

Sad, but true.

It is sad, and worse for those living through it. They seem to be willing to kill anyone who stands in their way, be it a Buddhist teacher in a classroom or a Muslim who won't join up. They've killed both.

Yes, when this happened on European soil in the 1990's, it was called ethnic clensing, the UN moved in and several proponents of the deaths were tried in The Hague. Of course, this is Thailand, there are bigger fish to fry, jostling for turns at the trough, so don't expect any action soon...

Two paramilitary rangers, two Buddhists shot dead and burned in

Thailand

Pattani, June. 24(AP): Suspected Muslim insurgents in southern Thailand fatally shot two paramilitary rangers and two Buddhists, then set their bodies on fire in two separate incidents on Sunday, police said.

The rangers, identified as Chakkraphong Oan-nguen and Thawatchai Maneesaeng, were attacked as they were riding a motorcycle back to their base after shopping in Narathiwat's Rue So district, said Police Sub. Lt. Woraphong Klomsakul.

The assailants shot the two men, then burned their bodies and took their assault rifles in the province, 800 kilometers (500 miles) south of the capital, Bangkok, he said.

Brothers Sujin Anubut, 75 and Amphan Anubut, 60, both Buddhists, were shot dead and their bodies were burned in Pattani's Ya Ring district, 750 kilometers (470 miles) south of Bangkok.

They were riding a motorcycle to a friend's house when they were attacked, said police Maj. Uthai Chaimala.
