There's no question that motorcycles are dangerous and driving motorcycles on the southern Islands in Thailand increases the danger by many times. The degree of recklessness here is quite astonishing and one must refrain from riding a motorbike here unless you have many years of experience and a lot of skill. Even then you must drive very defensively and without a great deal of speed, and top on the list is that you must always wear the best helmet you can afford. The chances of him having brought a helmet here is very low, meaning that he was likely wearing one of those very fragile skull caps, if he was wearing a helmet at all. People make this bizarre presumption that I will rent a motorcycle, because it's an island, and everything is very casual and what could possibly go wrong? Alot. The head is incredibly fragile and if you hit it in the wrong spot the game is over.
