renewing tax disc after 2 or 3 years

Hi, i know this has been asked before, but can't find the link. 

My friend has just returned after 2 1/2 years, he needs new car tax, I know there is a cut off point where you have to re-register the car, i.e. new number.  but how long is that ??

The consensus is 5 years mainly but it depends on the local DLT office.

21/2 years will cause no problem, if car is older than 7 years take it the local testing station to get it sorted, if not DIY

Vehicle would need a complete new registration.

It seems there is somewhere a rule which says 3 years, but we have had reports here on Aseannow from people who had more than 3 years of outstanding tax, and they got away with just paying the outstanding tax, no re-registration necessary. So in the end it probably varies from DLT to DLT, but considering that OP is still below 3 years he shouldn't have problems at any DLT.

Yes the rule exists. I am quite certain.

But I also know how strict rules are enforced in Thailand ????

Maybe it depends on if they have cancelled your reg number, and re-issued your reg number to another vehicle already.

It's possible that they check the reg number as you say and if still available ask you if you want to keep it. 

They did with me at our local DLT but I wanted a number plate of the province I live in.

 

Sounds like the OP doesn't have any problems.

Yeh I registered my car in my province also, funny thing happened one day, I was stopped at a red light, and noticed the 'car' in front had the exact same number same province, I followed it for a while, dash cam running, already to be a sleuth, after about 10min, it dawned on me he had white/green pick up plates, and me well  car plates. DOH! LMFO.
