Mid Posted June 26, 2007 Share Posted June 26, 2007 (edited) Nearly 200 arrested in crackdown From correspondents in Narathiwat June 26, 2007 09:01pm NEARLY 200 people have been detained in a crackdown on an insurgency in Thailand's Muslim-majority south, where three Muslims were killed in fresh attacks, officials said today.A 57-year-old village leader was gunned down in Narathiwat province today, after a 55-year-old man was killed late yesterday, police said. In nearby Pattani province, a 27-year-old Muslim man was killed and four others wounded when militants opened fire on a teashop during the night, they added. The latest violence came as the military announced it had detained almost 200 suspected militants since last week. "As of now almost 200 suspects, including six women, are detained for interrogation at a military base," army spokesman Colonel Acra Tiproch said. I heard about the shooting in pattani last night....right in the city area as well!! would be interesting...in a worrying sense...to see what happens when such a large group is arrested..given the recent history of what goes on when arrests are made...... Police said the suspect riding on the pillion of a motorbike stopped in front of the teashop in the Muang district (provincial seat) of Pattani. He walked toward the teashop and began to open fire, according to a report by news network The Nation. Also in Pattani, a bomb exploded minutes after a light truck carrying patrol soldiers passed by Tuesday morning, Thai News Agency reported. The bomb was detonated in Khok Pho district, shortly after the vehicle boarding a patol unit providing security for local teachers, passed by. Suspected bombers were believed to have missed the target. No one was wounded in the incident. While in nearby province Yala, a school and the office of a local government office in the provincial seat were destroyed in separate arson attacks Monday night, Tuesday morning, an unoccupied house opposite a highway district office in Also in Yala's provincial seat was burned.
