THE Public Prosecutor yesterday (Oct. 25) filed a lawsuit against Parliament President and incumbent Speaker of House of Representatives Mr. Chuan Leekpai on a charge of defaming former prime minister Thaksin Shinawater on Oct. 28, 2012 just three days before the statute of limitations was to expire,  TV Channel 7 said Wednesday.

Chuan had on that day given a speech on Thaksin’s policies on southern border provinces and it is alleged that an error was made.

Investigating officers at Wat Phraya Krai police station on Oct. 20, 2022 submitted this case to the Public Prosecutor with the opinion that Chuan be sued for defamation by advertising but not violating the Computer Crime Act. The prosecutors then filed the lawsuit at Southern Bangkok Criminal Court yesterday.

Tak Bai and Krue Se incidents to be raised in Thaksin’s libel trial against House Speaker

House Speaker Chuan Leekpai

The Krue Se and Tak Bai massacres in Thailand’s south in 2004, during Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s administration, are set to be revisited in the trial in the Criminal Court of a libel case, filed by the fugitive former prime minister against House Speaker Chuan Leekpai.

The case was filed many years ago, after Chuan gave a lecture to members of the Democrat Party on October 28th, 2012, about the situation in the four southern provinces, during which he blamed Thaksin for the mistakes made.

For unknown reasons, the case sat at the office of the public prosecutors for years and was not taken to court until recently, when the prosecutor in charge of the case told Chuan that he wanted to see him on Tuesday, to acknowledge the charges, as the case is due to expire this Friday.

Someone is seeking a glorious return! Rekindling a loss of face from 10 years ago, sounds like desperation!

Come on Thaksin, come back to Thailand and go complain.

Do you accept the laws of the country or not?

If you accept them then go to jail and wait until you are out of jail in maybe 10 years and then go complain about others.

Or shut up and stay in the desert.

I have no problem with this going through the Thai courts, providing 'Tony' attends in person. ????

Live in the past, lok in drawers, cupboards, closets, if you can find something that you can use, but don't move forward and make the country better... That is Thailand... Defamtion charges of things happened 10 years ago... Ridiculous.. Make a law that you can always charge someone even after 50 years and be happy to do so... I wrote many times Thailand need to enter the 21st century and yes people say and do things that other people don't like especially when they are more in the picture.. It is a part of their job and they have to get used to it and don't take the job. Stop with these stupid defamtion laws

The incidents date back to 2004, so it happened on Dr Thaksin's watch. The army reported to the government (and not the other way round as in other times). Present DPM Prawit has been pulled into the limelight of that sad stage by Dr. Thaksin as Prawit apparently ran the boot camp called Thailand back in the day.

Almost 20 years ago "Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra expressed regret for the deaths, but he insisted there had been no wrongdoing by military personnel" according to Wikipedia.

The difference between then and now is Zero, the story would be swept under the carpet one of the other way. None of the players, then nor present, will ever face the music and this tragic incident is just used to smear accusations around.

There is no statute of limitations on murder in Thailand is there?  I strongly suggest the victims of the extrajudical killings that were authorised by Thaksin should sue in a class action suit.

Asean Now poster boy Thaksin  get two threads this week.

Does this one count ?

Statute of limitations is 20 years in case of an offence punishable with death, imprisonment for life or imprisonment of 20 years.

shows how backward thai law is, thaksin should not be able to do this unless he is in Thailand, he does not live in here and has no thai passport so should not be able to use thai law against anyone unless he personally appears which he will never do because he is too scared of having to do time in a cell
