Thai budget for new fiscal year boosts spending on armed forces

BANGKOK (Thomson Financial) - Thailand's military-installed government unveiled Wednesday a budget of 1.66 trillion baht for the fiscal year ending September 2008, including an increase of 24 percent in defense spending.

Hardly surprising.

Something worth noting is that it doesn't imply that the armed forces will increase in size of manpower or material. Unlike some countries where you have to justify the increased spendings of enrichen the military-industrial complex by actuially using the wares you intend to purchase, be it by increase or start of new conflicts, I don't think we should be worried for any military surge against any other countries in the region. The amount of money that will get 'lost' - per custom here - into high ranking officials pockets only indicates that everything is as usual. And now when they could, they made sure they got more to eat via having their pals in power...
