BANGKOK (NNT) - Following the recent discovery of cesium-137 contamination at a factory in Prachin Buri province this week, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has reassured local residents of their safety and instructed authorities to conduct inspections.

According to Prime Minister’s Office Minister Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, the premier ordered relevant agencies to inspect industrial areas and said the government is working quickly to resolve the situation at Kabin Buri.

The statement was made after a cesium-137 radioactive isotope cylinder, which went missing last week, was recovered during an inspection of steel smelting plants in Kabin Buri district’s industrial area. Prachin Buri provincial authorities later announced the closure of the smelting factory and implemented a lockdown of the area, ordering all employees to evacuate the facility for safety reasons.

The Pollution Control Department has meanwhile concluded its investigation of radiation levels at six locations near the steel factory and reported that none of the sites were contaminated. Police are currently looking into the disappearance of the cylinder and how it was handled at the district metal factory.

But I thought it was smelted?  The 13 tons of furnace dust?  How much metal was contaminated.  Let's hear some international professional chemist or radiation expert explain the chemistry and risks.

In other news, the women that came in contact with it have grown a third breast and mens body parts are enlarging. . Oddly, the mutation is a tourist boom in Pattaya. TOT is calling a 30% uptick in tourism.

Ahhh, doesn't that give you a nice warm glow?  Just like the isotope would!

If they are the same guys who manage the fires in smog season…. We are all safe ????

Yes, declared the PM, you are still 25,000 to 1 more likely to die on our roads

Wrong way round. As usual, Thailand does things backwards. You conduct inspections BEFORE reassuring people, not after. Even if the reassurance is a lie anyway, to avoid panic and unrest in society, as they love to spout.

Welcome to Government of Kwailand

in short "we" and probably "they"  don't know anything about the real ray of spreading.  The winds are blowing South since a week and are announced to continue in that direction for the coming days. Better buy a Geiger counter yourself if you want to know if you are concerned.

No wolly, naa....

The heat in the smelter will kill the isotopes...

He who smelted it dealted it. I think they will eventually consult with outside experts.

"You" and "they" could research this yourself.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesium-137  and  https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/radiation/emergencies/isotopes/cesium.htm There wasn't enough in that capsule to present any danger if it was smelted or burned unless someone was in close proximity at the time. The only danger would have been to anyone who handled it, or if someone at the factory inhaled fumes from it, and that is unlikely. That's the REAL science. But believe what you want.

rather than make comments that are not based on reliable facts, and reflect little to no knowledge of the actual science, you people could actually research this yourselves.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesium-137  and  https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/radiation/emergencies/isotopes/cesium.htm There wasn't enough in that capsule to present any danger if it was smelted or burned unless someone was in close proximity at the time. Not quite. It's the plate on the end right-hand side of OP picture.
