The Highways Department is recommending alternative routes for motorists who want to leave Bangkok to celebrate the Songkran festival.

The department’s director-general, Sarawut Songsivilai, said that department is ready to help motorists to travel safely and conveniently between April 11th and 17th.

The department expects about seven million vehicles to travel during the seven-day period, about a 5.3% increase from last year. The highest number of vehicles leaving Bangkok is expected on April 12th, when more than 640,000 are expected. On the return trip, about 610,000 vehicles are anticipated on April 16th.

So 30,000 are not gonna make it back home?

They are just smart enough not to travel on that day.

Make it a 2 week vacation.  Leave early, come back late.

Several years ago I went to Mukdahan during Songkran.  I live in Ratchaburi.  I went a few days early and had no problem.  I thought I was leaving late enough after Songkran.  I was wrong.  It took 13 hours to drive from Mukdahan to Saraburi.  Then finally it cleared up enough and only took 3 hours from Saraburi to Ratchaburi, it was after midnight then.
