I need to acquire a cat flap in Pattaya or surrounding area - I have checked a few shops that sell pet food and pet accessories and toys but no cat flap :o

Does anyone know of a Larger Pet Store in the area that may sell them :D

would appreciate any feedback - it means Freedom for my moggies when I am at work

thanks in advance

hi,

I got mine from a little petshop at the side of Robinsons in Sriracha. It was imported and about 1000 baht, but having tried all over Bangkok as well as Pattaya that was the only place that had one.

Hope that helps

And how do you put it in? Order a new door with a hole to fit the flap? Ot am I missing something obvious? This isn't an empty question - I have 3 cats, I'm presently in europe and I'll get something if it can be used without too much problem in my rented house.

when i have previously fitted a cat flap there is installation instructions; consisting of a template that you trace onto the door, cut a hole in the door then fit the cat flap. I am going to fit it in the back kitchen door which, fortunately is only a cheap plywood type jobbie.

If anyone is coming to Pattaya anytime soon, I would be grateful if they could bring a cat flap with them, then I will buy it off them

On reflection I don't want to give my cats total freedom, so I might be interested in a lockable cat flap. (Do they exist?). Let's see what I turn up here at a Paris shop. I post.

But the flap would be shipped to Chiang Rai with my other household stuff which I'm here to send. So it would probably get to you eventually later than pattaya girl's return.

We had a cat flap in Euroland once, it was lockable in different ways, fully open, fully closed, allow incoming or outgoing only. This way you can set it to allow the cat to enter but no go out again, for example.

I've never seen cat flaps in Thailand but perhaps in one of the malls in Bangkok?

I'd be worried about what other critters entered this way tho, in particular snakes...

Thanks for the info about the flaps.

But, snakes? Did you have to introduce that unwelcome ingredient to my reflection on this?

Otherwize the flap you describe sounds just the ticket. Will look around...

Mine is a rented house which is a complicating factor, but I'll cut a hole anyway. Wonder what they'll hit me for when I vacate - Oh well I'll just assume he wouldn't have returned the 3 month deposit anyway, so anything less from him can come as a pleasant surprize.

I called in there on Saturday, BOY! did I have fun trying to explain what a cat flat is to the girl behind the counter! :o

no luck, when did you buy yours from there?

There are two particular type of cat flaps that are most popular..

One is the one Phil Conners described; 4-way locking, can exit but not enter, can enter but not exit ,freeway either way and locked both sides.

the other type is a magnetic flap, this is locked but is activated from a magnet of the cats collar, so as you moggies walks up to the flap, the magnet reacts and the flap opens

I am preferring the former choice as my cats have never worn collars and I am reluctant to introducing them to one now

Sorry about that .. you know the saying: Don't shoot the messenger :o

About the installation, how about finding a window to put it in, a local glass shop ought to be able to cut the necessary hole for the flap to be installed and it'll almost certainly be cheaper to replace the window pane later (at least if you find a small window pane to do it in).

Phil Connors and helicoptor seem to have experience with the lockable cat flaps. I haven't; and was wondering whether the cat quickly learns about this feature and therefore continues to try it whenever it wants to go out/in, or whether it becomes confused/frustrated about the inconsistency and stops trying to use it.

Don't want my cats to go into a flap; rather, that faced with their new unpredictable contraption they should soon become unflappable.

I like the concept; but is it feasible in practice?

Perhaps someone has done it? Or tried and fount it not to work? Either would be useful to know.

I managed to order a 4-way locking flap from the Pet Shop down the side of Robinsons from the owner, the shop assistant called him and fortunately he spoke good English and was able to understand what I wanted, I should get it next week - knowing my luck I will be picking up a dog lead :D

With hindsight I wish I had opted for the magnetic catch type that is activated from the cat collar :o the other night one Thai cat ran into the house chasing my falang cat who was chilling on the front step with the door open, I managed to lock my cat into a bedroom and shoo the Mafia cat out, but not before the disorientated moggie did two lap of the living room attempting to run up the walls and across the kitchen surfaces :D

this has happened twice now - why don't thai's take care of their pets ? (yet another topic done to death)

Happened once here too. The "mafia cat" (heh) went home minus balls plus rabies shot. Cost me around 500 baht. Shrug.

Best for all concerned.
