A US grand jury that is expected to decide whether to charge former President Donald Trump and his allies over their efforts to overturn the 2020 election has been sworn in in Georgia.

Mr Trump has been under investigation for his 2021 phone call to a Georgia election official, pressing him to find thousands of votes in his favour.

The Republican has denied wrongdoing.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Wallis, a Democrat, launched the investigation in early 2021.

She has previously hinted that any charges would probably be filed in August.

A focal point of the inquiry is a January 2021 call between Mr Trump and Georgia's chief elections officer, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, in which the then-president suggested local officials could "find" more than 11,000 votes - enough to give him a victory in the Peach State.

In a recording of the call, Mr Raffensperger is heard replying that Georgia's results are correct.

Donald Trump will likely soon be hit with a "massive conspiracy case" out of Georgia for allegedly attempting to overturn the election there, and there could be dozens of defendants who join him

"The week of august 7th and 14th, and you set no in-person hearings during those two weeks.

The "only really inference there is that she knows full well that she is going to drop a mass of conspiracy indictment that will probably include, according to one of the grand jurors who gave some interviews after the special purpose grand jury had concluded its work, perhaps dozens of people.

He's trying his best to wriggle out of it.

Trump Seeks Court Order to Quash Investigation in Georgia

In his latest legal maneuver, Donald J. Trump sought a court order on Friday that would throw out the work of an Atlanta special grand jury and disqualify Fani T. Willis, the prosecutor leading an investigation into election interference in Georgia.

A decision on indictments looms in the investigation, which has been in progress for more than two years. Ms. Willis, the district attorney of Fulton County, has signaled that the decision will come in the first half of August; she recently asked judges in a downtown Atlanta courthouse not to schedule trials for part of that time as she prepares to bring charges.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers made their request in a filing to Georgia’s Supreme Court. They want the court to throw out the evidence gathered by the special grand jury.

That will be a big test of whether Cannon is in the tank for Trump.

Trump's team before long will probably file some motions to dismiss the indictment all together. They may make their Presidential Records Act argument, they may make malicious prosecution arguments. They'll make their argument about the Special Counsel's appointment being unconstitutional. Those should all normally be easily rejected by the judge. But if she entertains those, obviously we’ll know she’s in the tank for Trump..
