This Thursday (July 13) will see a crucial vote in Thailand’s Parliament when 500 MPs and 250 senators convene to select the country’s 30th prime minister.

 

Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat is the main candidate for the top job as he is backed by a coalition of eight political parties with a combined 312 MPs.

 

Led by Move Forward, which won the May 14 election with 151 seats, the coalition commands a majority in the House of Representatives that would be enough to elect Pita as PM if only MPs could vote.

 

However, a provisional clause in the Constitution allows the Senate to join the Lower House in electing the prime minister. Anyone nominated for the PM seat requires majority support from both Houses, or at least 376 votes.

 

That means Pita needs at least 64 more votes to achieve the required majority. And it won’t be easy for him and Move Forward to achieve that goal, analysts say. Some point to a high possibility of Pita failing to win the PM’s seat.

No one in the general public will know the outcome until it actually happens. The old goats are trying everything they can to stop it or postpone it. Hopefully we will get some good news soon.

that 312 are far from sure. It can be a bit more, when some other party MPs vote for him, or it can be a bit less, if some change their mind, or get sick

I would be shocked if Pita does get the needed votes.

 

Not that I don't want him to be PM.  I just think I am more realistic about what will happen.

Double blow for Thailand's Pita as legal cases mount on eve of PM vote

BANGKOK, July 12 (Reuters) - Thai prime ministerial hopeful Pita Limjaroenrat was dealt a major setback on Wednesday when two separate complaints against him gained momentum, threatening to derail his leadership bid on the eve of a crucial vote on the premiership.

 

Pita's supporters, many of them younger voters opposed to the royalist military's involvement in politics, called for protests later on Wednesday, raising the possibility of another round of turmoil in two decades of fractious Thai politics.

 

The Constitutional Court said it had accepted a complaint filed by a lawyer against Pita and his election-winning Move Forward Party's that said its plan to reform a law prohibiting royal insults amounted to an attempt "to overthrow the democratic regime of government with the king as a head of state".
