A Pheu Thai-led government could revive talks with Cambodia on gas exploration

A good relationship with the Cambodian government would be a prerequisite for the resumption of negotiations on overlapping claims to natural gas resources in the Gulf of Thailand, experts said, but warned of a return to a cold conflict if there were mutual reservations.

The dividends of a diplomatic bonhomie would be high, as together they could exploit an estimated 1 trillion baht worth of energy resources.

Political turmoil and bruised nationalism, mostly in Thailand after the military coup in 2006, became a major impediment for progress in talks between the two countries on demarcating the disputed maritime boundaries as well as jointly developing petroleum reserves in the 26,000 square-kilometre area, they said.

The issue was discussed at length during a seminar on the overlapping claims of the two countries in the Gulf of Thailand. The event was jointly hosted by Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Law and the Foreign Ministry’s Treaties and Legal Affairs Department on August 10, even as the Thai side is still waiting for new guidelines and instructions from the yet-to-be-formed government.

They STILL do not get it .

No future ( for people and Nature ) in fossil fuels . It did way too much damage already ... but all that counts is the money that can be made out of it .

Disgusting .

Not much time left , I'm afraid ...

If it’s not for the neo-conservatives that hijacked the JV for political justification to be relevant, Thailand would not have to depend on expensive imported gas prices that has handicapped EGAT ability to lower electricity costs for the people. EGAT is heavily in debt and servicing of loans are impediment to lowering the electricity rates. Imported gas prices will remain elevated if the Ukraine war grinds on. The JV is long overdue

Sure , off shore drilling will substantially lower the electricity costs for the average thai consumer ....? What about preservation of the ( already damaged ) environment ? That off shore project can do so much harm that the costs to repair the damage done by it far exceed the benefits of ( a little ) lower gas prices .

Again , in times of substantial environmental change and the consequences resulting of that ,  the money that can eventually be made , should be put behind when considering the environmental damage done by the drilling and use of fossil fuels like gas .

Some people never learn ...

There is lot of room in the production of renewables or bioenergy ...

Not really need more fossil fuels ...

Thailand relies on domestic production for about 70% of its total gas demand, and the remaining comes equally from pipeline imports via Myanmar and seaborne LNG at around 15% each.

Offshore drilling is risky business. It can have devastating consequences for oceans and coastal communities. It’s also expensive. But fossil fuel companies are willing to pay the price to access the potentially large reserves under the seafloor .

Until we stop sacrificing public waters to fossil fuels, we’ll continue to see oil spills that devastate ecosystems and coastal communities, exploratory activity that harms wildlife, and the acceleration of our climate crisis.

Imagine the wealth that would generate for a select few and who would be paying for it.

Don’t disagree with you. Thailand is embarking a fair bit of renewal energy projects and reducing reliance on coal and fossil fuels. However the government need to address the bread and butter issues of everyday people and the high cost of electricity and is an immediate concern.
