A total of 1,099 Thais working in Israel have expressed a wish to return to Thailand and the Royal Thai Air Force has arranged for an Airbus 340 and four C-130 transport planes to evacuate them as soon as Israel gives the green light.

Labour Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn told a news conference today (Monday) that most of the Thais want to return home have been working in southern Israel, near Gaza, where fighting has been raging between Israeli defence forces and Hamas militants.

As of Sunday night, he disclosed that about 5,000 Thais have been evacuated from Gaza to safety and evacuation is continuing.

Are they still staying in southern Israel? How hard is it to bus to a friendly zone (Cario)?  If 5000 bombs started raining down my area, I sure as heck would be bugging out as soon as humanly possible via bus, car, motorbike, bike, walking.

To reach the border with Egypt, they would have to be bused back through the hostile area (the Negev). Not a very smart move. I doubt if the IDF would permit it anyway. They have enough security issues on their hands already.

What are 5,000 Thais in Gaza, and 1,099 in Israel doing there anyway? Thailand needs them! Reportedly, the unemployment rate in Thailand is only about 1 percent. Who will construct all the condos for the Chinese?

I'm confused. There were really 5,000 Thais IN Gaza? Really? I would find that very surprising.

Near the Gaza border -- expected.

Very kind of you... my nephew is a wonderful person. I have known him for over 20 years when he was 8 years old - he has a lovely wife and delightful daughter - - this is his 4th year working in Israel to provide for his family.

Why are you so mean?

Not in Gaza. Working in the area attacked within Israel near Gaza.

Shoddy reporting, or editing.

My blonde neighbour thinks the Gaza Strip is a former Newcastle United player's uniform.????

Khaosod English reported yesterday there were "about a total of 30,000 Thais in Israel", with ~ 5,000 in affected areas.
