BANGKOK (NNT) - The Board of Investment (BOI) has disclosed discussions surrounding policies to support Japanese car manufacturers that still produce internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

The aim is to ensure Thailand remains a primary global production hub for the next 15 years. Current deliberations involve stakeholders from car companies and affected parties from various groups. Final decisions on support measures will be made after careful consideration.

This week, an investment promotion committee meeting will be held, with Srettha Thavisin, the Prime Minister and Finance Minister, presiding over its inaugural session. The main agenda is to review the investment promotion figures for the first nine months of 2023. Growth is expected to continue, especially given the statistics for the first half of the year, from January to June of 2023.

During this period, a total of 891 projects applied for investment promotion, a rise of 18%, representing an investment value of 364.42 billion baht, a significant 70% increase compared to the same period the previous year.

Moreover, the BOI is anticipated to discuss the overall investment landscape for the year, with a focus on the growing electric vehicle (EV) sector. The board will also review progress on talks with traditional combustion car manufacturers in line with the Prime Minister’s policy, trends for the remaining three months of the year, and investment projections for 2024.

Good move.....when everybody starts falling for the EV con job, perhaps it's a good idea to keep a finger in the ICE pie.

Excellent move. In the next 10-20 years when the EV owner (average income) needs to trade in the car and/or buy a new battery, they'll be looking for an ICE vehicle to replace it.  EV are also not that 'environmental'.  After all, they require electricity and the solar and wind generated systems will not meet the demand.

For the consumers of much greater than average income, they'll have one EV and one ICE (as a backup or for long distance). Not everyone can have an advance team to drive ahead and reserve the charging station with an ICE vehicle.

Good to see that Thailand is still a Hub. That description has not been used for a while; I was missing it.
