Thai film censorship guidelines revamped for creative freedom

The National Soft Power Strategy Committee has unveiled modifications to the Thai film censorship guidelines, acknowledging that the existing restrictions are hindering creativity and no longer reflect the social landscape of Thailand.

This shift in policy now allows private sector input in the film and video consideration committee, as revealed by the National Committee on Soft Power Development’s chairwoman, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, on Thursday. The only films still barred from screening in Thailand will be those with content potentially impacting the monarchy.

Films portraying religious themes or explicit sexual content will now be subject to reclassification to suit the relevant audience, as opposed to facing outright prohibition.

The pixelating out of fake guns, knifes and even wounds and smoking is laughable.

The pixelation of nudity and smoking is absolutely inane, it makes Thailand look like a prudish society from the 16th or 17th century. Kind of like want to be Quakers or Puritans, this has to change it is beyond silly, it's an embarrassment

Film and creative revolution being brewed by ‘Ung Ing’ to transform Thailand’s global soft power
by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor

On Thursday, Pheu Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra outlined plans including legislation and budget plans for a new agency to usher in a new era of creative production in Thailand. In brief, the plan will virtually eliminate film censorship except related to the monarchy and the lèse-majesté laws. It forms part of an overarching new foreign policy to project Thailand as a player on the world stage.

Ung Ing, the dynamic leader of Pheu Thai, unveils a bold plan for Thailand’s film industry transformation. Proposing a new law and creative agency, the initiative aims to grant filmmakers artistic freedom, lifting bans except for matters concerning the monarchy. This move aligns with Thailand’s ‘World Player’ foreign policy.

The up-and-coming young leader of Pheu Thai, Paetongtarn Shinawatra or ‘Ung Ing’, has unveiled an exciting plan to completely revolutionise film production and the creative industry in Thailand. It involves a new law and creative agency which aims to be up and running this year. The plan is to allow filmmakers complete artistic freedom while doing away with bans on movies in the kingdom except relating to lèse-majesté and the monarchy. The ultimate goal is to enhance Thailand’s soft power and the initiative is to be seen as part of the Kingdom’s new ‘World Player’ foreign policy agenda.

In what could turn out to be a significant development for the Thai media industry, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the leader of the Pheu Thai Party, is turning to film. In the meantime, speculation in political circles has been rife about the 27-year-old’s future.

Senior Pheu Thai ministers have been forced to reject suggestions of a cabinet reshuffle to allow her a seat at the table.
