The Department of Disease Control has procured 200,000 dozes of influenza vaccine, to be provided to people working in tourism and tourism-related activities, such as taxi and bus drivers, hotel staff and employees of entertainment venues in 31 pilot provinces.

472,222 people were infected with influenza last year. 29 died, most from Type A influenza. The five provinces with highest numbers of infections were Rayong, Phayao, Phuket, Bangkok and Chiang Mai respectively.

Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, director-general of the Disease Control Department, said today that, although influenza infections are steadily decreasing, the department finds it necessary to vaccinate people, especially those working in tourism, to protect them from becoming infected and to build confidence among tourists.
