Illegal immigrants a problem for Thailand

Excerpts:

Thai Supreme Commander Boonsang Niempradit has acknowledged that illegal ethnic immigrants from Laos and Burma pose a difficult problem for Thailand.

On Friday, he made an inspection tour of two important living sites for illegal ethnic immigrants in Northern Thailand.

After an inspection tour of Rohingya communities in the northwestern province of Tak, along the Burmese border, Gen. Boonsang neither denied or confirmed that some Rohingya residents are involved with the persistent insurgency in southern Thailand.

"I can't confirm that they have nothing to do with the ongoing insurgency," Gen. Boonsang said, referring to Muslim ethnic group from western Burma which speak a language unrelated to either Thai or the Malay spoken by many Thai Muslims.

"But if they have not conspired with the insurgents really, these ethnic people are very pitiful, because they are always considered untrustworthy and subject to extreme skepticism."

The camp in Phetchabun is home to some 7,700 people. (TNA)
