Ringleader of global monkey torture network, 'The Torture King', is charged

Michael Macartney, also known as "Torture King," has been charged by US federal prosecutors in Virginia for his involvement in a global monkey torture network. Macartney, 50, was identified as one of the key distributors in a network exposed by the BBC, which involved the creation and distribution of animal-crushing videos.

The investigation by the BBC revealed that Macartney operated several chat groups on the encrypted messaging app Telegram, where enthusiasts of monkey torture from around the world shared ideas for custom-made torture videos. These videos depicted horrific acts such as setting live monkeys on fire, injuring them with tools, and even putting them in blenders, resulting in the death of baby long-tailed macaque monkeys in some cases.

According to charging documents, Macartney collected funds from his chat groups and distributed videos depicting the torture, murder, and sexually sadistic mutilation of animals, specifically monkeys. He has cooperated with investigators from the Department of Homeland Security and agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy charges, facing up to five years in prison.

In an interview with the BBC Eye investigations team, Macartney confessed to his role in the torture network, describing himself as the "king of this demented world" and admitting to actively participating in discussions about the torture of monkeys.

More charges are expected to follow for other key players in the monkey torture network, with at least 20 people under investigation globally. In addition to Macartney, two others have been charged in the US, and two torturers have been arrested and jailed in Indonesia.

In the UK, two women, Holly LeGresley and Adriana Orme, have been charged with publishing an obscene article and causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. David Christopher Noble and Nicole Devilbiss are also facing charges in the US for their involvement in the network.
