It reeks of the histories of certain nearby Asian countries. There is nothing comparable in any developed Western nation and where there are issues over free speech, there is at least enough of an opposition or pressure group to provide some checks. Here you have a case of laws being used to tread on opposition and no one dare to stand up and push for more freedom because of the nature of the law. Tread on opposition? Opposition to what? What is so difficult to comply with lese majeste laws? Millions and millions do so every day without any difficulty whatsoever and don't feel the slightest disturbance in their lives. Politcally that is salient point. The ordinary people of Thailand love and respect the insitution. If the red shirts become an organization whose Bangkok based leaders and members keep getting hauled up in front of judges for insulting the institution and the red shirts are seen constantly demonstrating outside these courts to release people charged with this crime, then real wedge will be formed between the Bangkok based leaders and leftists and the provincial Thaksin supporters who still revere the institution. All this must be censered, not only in Thailand, but all over the world. Also I hope Jonathan Head, Giles Ungkaporn and Jakrapob Penkair all gets the maximum 15 years sentenses for insulting the king. Their cases must also not be reported. They are not even worth a trial. The trend towards suppressing press freedom in Thailand and using LM to harass your political enemies reached its apex under Thaksin, who used these tactics consistently. Now the former opposition, it can be argued, is using the latter tactic, but at least they aren't--so far--trying to increase executive power while at the same time diminishing that of the fifth column. Thailand's lowest press freedom ratings since the 70s evolved during Thaksin's terms of office. The number of LM cases also multiplied beyond anything seen before in this regnum. Another women has just been convicted to 12 years imprisonment, sentence reduced to 6 years after confessing. Harry Nicolaides has been in jail for more than 6 months already, repeated requests for bail have been refused by the court. Facts... Extremely poor reporting from the Nation. A while ago they reported that Thaksin's assets had been siezed in the UK, also BS. The internet shows just how bad the two English language dailies are. Ruangkrai questioned how Government Spokesman Nattawut Saikua, People Power Party MP Jatuporn Prompan, and Veera Musikapong had the money to buy shares in Puan Pong Nong Pi Co Ltd. He said an official document listing the company shareholders dated April 2007 showed that Nattawut held 200,000 shares worth 20 Million Baht, Jatuporn held 100,000 shares worth 10 Million Baht, and Veera held 100,000 shares worth 10 Million Baht in the company. He asked where the three got the money to own these shares. The Senator also said that from June to October before the Dec 23 general election, Nattawut, Jatuporn, and Jakrapob sold 100,000 shares each or 10 Million Baht each. He asked if the money was used for the election campaign and if they had reported that to the Election Commission in how much they spent on their campaigns. At this rate the idea floated during the Junta's regime of extending LM to protect the Privy Council might be raised again. Given that the new Deputy PM has just advocated giving the Council increased powers over selecting the "Independent Organizations" (against the spirit of Section 14 of the 2007 Constitution IMO), and the fact that criticising the judiciary or their decisions can now get you thrown inside for Contempt of Court, it doesn't take a rocket (or political) scientist to see where we're heading as far as transparency and accountability in politics is concerned. As far as the PAD go, I thought one of their proclamations was to put an end to the use of LM as a political tool. It was one of the few things I agreed with them on (although their Royalist rhetoric to an extent seemed to go against this point). If the Dem's other new LM proposal is enacted (that a charge won't have to go to a police investigation first, but can go straight to "Contempt of Court-protected" court), then I find it difficult to see how this is good for Thailand, its people or - more importantly given the nature of the law - the monarchy itself. How many other PMs have been pictured so? And motor mouth should have known this. The problem for the Bangkok based red ideologues and Bangkok based dandy red leftists (who are different from the up country Thaksin liking reds) is that the stories of what some of their beliefs are, are now starting to go around in the rural areas where they tried to keep this quiet previously, so every little controversy on this matter hurts them more and more with those they are or maybe increasingly were allied with or looked to for support. This could help to explain Jatuporn's idiotic comment in terms of trying to show his respect.
