Gulf of thailand

Hi all I'm new to the forum and happy to see the girls page. I'm in the states now, but will be back in the winter if all goes well. After spending much time on Phangan and Samui and keeping myself pretty close to only the Thai people I'm feeling that it would be wise to make friends with the Farangs that live and work there.

I'm hoping to pack everything up in the next 5 years and make Thailand my home.

I'm looking for a Dermatologist on Samui if anyone can get me a phone number that would be great. They would have to be a surgeon as I may need to have skin cancer removed.

I went to the Samui Hospital web page and didn't get a reply from an e-mail sent. I'm going to make an appointment  with the dentist there and set up a Pap as well. If anyone has better ideas of Doctors, I'd love to  hear about it.

hi seville

you can get all these treatments in the hospitals here on samui, is also cheaper than private practice and usually better standard (depending on which hospital). you can find out easy while staying here. if you have a specific problem or want the highest standard it's worth to go to Bangkok for that.

Thanks for the replies.

What I'm hoping to do though is get some dialog with some people that live in the Gulf on the Islands or Hua Hin area.

How you've managed to move there and advice for someone who is trying to do the same. I have Thai friends that have property and are talking about long term leases for building a house. I'd like to partner up with some folks and invest in an existing bussiness. I don't want to add to the building of new bussinesses. Any stories of people that are not retired working that type of thing out. Forming of corperations and the like. Law firms that you trust.

I'm looking at Phangan, but anyone on Samui or Koh Tao that has something to share, I'd love to hear from you. Or if you know of anyone not on this list to e-mail and than maybe meet when I go back.

As I said before this is a long time out, but I'd like to meet some more Farang that are there.

I think that you need to read a book called:

Money is Number One

You can get it from the same book outlet that I told you about allready. See above.... Be very careful with 'Thai friends'

who want you to buy land, invest in a business, etc. PLEASE read Money is number ONE....  Timmer1950

Thanks for the suggestion. Where are you? My trust level is slipping and I'm sure the book is going to be full of interesting stories. This is one of the reasons, I'm trying to met and get to know more westerners that are over there. I'm American and many of the Thais seem to think that money is really easy to come by here and that we're all living the life of movie stars. I live in California that doesn't help.

seville, it doesn't matter if you are a man or a woman, the same rules and dangers apply. have you stayed in thailand already for some time or just for a shorter holiday?

I think the advice given by Timmer is not the worst and in a country like here you have to be double careful, especially with investing money. dealing only with westerners doesn't guarantee they are not scam. many westerners who stay here long time tend to apply 'thai style' in business matters... I could tell you lots of stories about westerners who have been ripped off their investments by their own country fellows here. it depends how much money you want to invest and and how and in what kind of business, e.g. as sleeping partner etc.

so be double/triple careful and get a real good lawyer once you decide to put money into something here.

if you plan to come living here in about 5 years time and want to invest already now, how about buying some land in a good area, you might (so god will..) be able to sell it at a good price when you move here or if you change your mind by then.

just a thought...

Been there a few times and stayed for two months the last time. I hear you, the book Timmer suggested looked to be just about bar girls and the like.

Buying Land? I thought you couldn't buy land there? Is there something I've missed. I think I'm being sadly awakened to the fact that greed has taken over there.

I have some friends from here that want to have a small little business/comunnity we can put together. Nothing big, very small and no one is trying to make a lot of money. Just enough to get us by. I'd still come to the states to work. We know some families that have land and what not, but the Thais are so quick to say, "You can have buy this land and build a bungalow", that the red flags go flying up.That's why I'm looking for people that are on Phangan and Samui to talk with and meet.

Seville,

You are best to take it easy & then on your next trip to Thailand visit a reputable Lawyer in Bangkok or the area in which you are planning on setting up home. Farang can buy land in LOS but under a company name & not personally. You will have to go through a lawyer who will set up a company for you with you being a 49percent owner with 7 thais all owning a small percentage totalling 51 percent. This will make you the majority share holder, usually the lawyer suggests using a couple of thai pals & then some people from his office so that no one can gang together & become majority shareholders thus making you lose your investment, (complete strangers are better) Once this is done, your company can then buy land, set up business, own a house, whatever you want to do, the lawyer will explain the different businesses you can own under one company name, I think there are about 21 different types all under one name, you will then be required to get a working permit under the business, but be warned, if you are planning on doing this with other foreigners wanting to live & work here too, then your company must be registered for a lot of money as I beleive that your company must be reqistered for 2 million baht per 1 working permit (can someone with more knowledge please clarify this for seville?)

With regards to living & working with many people wanting to make enough to get by then this really isn't a very realistic ideal. Most people here owning businesses make just enough for 2 people with little or no profit, unless you are planning in investing in a large hotel or bungalow resort then you will really only be making enough for yourself & a partner (& sometimes not even that much in low season) Restaurants are allso low earners in terms of profit with sometimes the staff making more than the owners some months ( with salary & tips) The only business people that I know who really make good money are import export companys, sending thai goods overseas & selling then at US prices. (Just a thought!)

Good Luck with what you decide to do.

Thanks Boo, your on Samui aren't you? Taking it easy is exactyly what I plan on doing. If you know of a good law firm there that would be helpful down the line perhaps. Like I said, I don't see me doing much before say 5 years from now and I plan on keeping my eyes and ears wide open when I go back. This Forum has really helped me see some light on some things.

Thanks again
