I've tried Pantip and Fortune Tower before, but nowhere had them, all the shops sell basically the same standard monitors. If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

I bought a 20" 1600x1200 LCD from Dell Thailand as part of a new desktop computer about 9 months ago.

Dell Thailand sales seem to be based in a phone center in Malaysia, but they have local toll-free numbers in Thailand. Check www.dell.co.th and look for the contact info for "smaller than 200 persons" organizations. The Dell Malaysia website pricing seemed consistent with the price quote we got, in case you want to browse anonymously first.

They can fax you or email you a quote. We ordered by phone, wired the purchase price to a Dell account, and it was delivered to our house. By the way, we had a problem with the computer, and after one phone call a guy was at our door with a new replacement part within a day or two. So, I am not sure why people have suggested Dell is not serving customers here anymore.

Better service than what they offer in Europe or the states. This is our contact.

There are LCD monitors with that resolution, but like other exotic products that aren't imported in volume, are all pretty much ridiculously priced. I've seen monitors that should be sold at less than 20k baht, being sold at 40k. You can probably buy them, just inquire at the store which displays many monitors of a particular brand. They'll probably say that they can order it, and that it will be expensive. Pantip has a shop, at the floor above the mezzanine level in the area around the main atrium, which has a ton of LCDs on display. That store is probably your best best.

Having said that, most LCD monitors sold today are widescreen, which, for a similar resolution would mean either 1680x1050 (20-22") or 1920x1200 (23-24"). These will be slightly easier to find. The reason that there are more widescreen monitors is that they're cheaper to manufacture for each screen diagonal size (a widescreen monitor has less actual viewable area than a normal 4:3 aspect monitor of the same diagonal size). Quite a few manufacturers are coming out with cheaper (around 16k baht) 24" monitors (Samsung for one). However, it remains to be seen if the importers will import these monitors in volume at the right price.

One reason that I don't like Dell is that it doesn't actually seem to have a clear presence in Thailand. Take a look at its website, it looks half-hearted at most, and displays only a very limited selection of products. You have to call them (which in this day and age and for this kind of company WHICH HAS NO SHOP PRESENCE, is absolutely ridiculous) to get any real information. Pretty much all of it is based in Malaysia, and the main focus is on corporate customers with fat accounts. Of course, there are people (mostly Americans, who have pretty much bought into the Dell ideal) which embrace Dell because of, well, it's Dell. Most locals couldn't, and wouldn't give a second glance at this kind of company. It just doesn't work here.

But they do seem to hold their word when it comes to service in LOS, despite the crappy attempt at product sales you noted. My former employer had the best Dell customer care package and they made house calls for various service on several occasions, free of charge.

They have recently started to target the SMB market, weakly, but it's nothing compared to the product line up offered elsewhere.

I really can't fault Dell's service record (mostly, at least) in Thailand, even though it's a bit weird to be calling Malaysia for service. It's just that compared to the actual feeling of "presence" in the US, Dell in Thailand is pretty much non-existent to the average Thai. They could have made up for it with a good website, similar to the one in the US, but no, it's mainly phone sales. Phone sales should have gone out with the dodo bird and the dinosaurs. Even their ad campaign is extremely weak. It's as if they didn't care about the Thai consumer market, as long as the big corporations kept buying from them.

Thanks for the replies people.

I was hoping there would be a specialist store I could just walk in to and buy there and then, but it seems like I'll have to order them or import them myself. I'll ask around in Pantip again, and give Dell a call, but I may just end up ordering them from the US.
