Dozens Feared Dead in Crash After Passenger Flight Diverts From Russia

Was it a flock of birds?  Or a Russian missle.   Russia would never lie.

Some aviation experts have suggested that perforations in the plane’s tail section, visible in footage of the crash site posted by Kazakhstan’s emergencies ministry and verified by Storyful, looked consistent with a possible missile attack or the work of air defenses.

“Video of the wreckage and the circumstances around the airspace security environment in southwest Russia indicates the possibility the aircraft was hit by some form of antiaircraft fire,” said Matt Borie, chief intelligence officer at aviation security firm Osprey Flight Solutions.

He said the damage pattern available in footage of the incident doesn’t yet match that of a bird strike, but cautioned that further information and input from regulators was needed to confirm the possibility.

Looks like a bird stike.  Did the bird beaks cause that damage.

Footage taken inside the plane after whatever it was that hit it, and from the ground, showing of the final decent and crash.  Amazing that there were survivors.

It's not as if Russia doesn't have form in shooting down civilian airplanes - and it increasingly looks like they've done it again.

Pretty obvious what actually happened. Waiting for formal report.

So has the US - Iran Air Flight 655.  So using that same logic, perhaps using an America proxy in the region it "increasingly looks like they've done it again."

Yes!  That statement is as ludicrous as yours. But I expect no less from the Russian-haters here on this forum.  Time will tell.

American proxies in either Azerbaijan or southern Russia? No, you have the monopoly on ludicrous statements on this thread thus far.

If it walks like an ytka and it squwaks like an ytka, in Russia its probably an ytka.

Kremlin is warning Russians not to speculate on what caused the Embraer 190 crash.

About as close as Russians will get to a full admission that YES, we shot it down.

The Kremlin can suck it, DaCheech.

Air security and investigation company, Osprey Flight Solutions, announced their initial findings:

"Citing assessments of footage of the crash, the damage to the aircraft, and recent military activity, aviation-security firm, Osprey Flight Solutions, said in an alert to airlines that the flight “was likely shot down by a Russian military air-defense system.” "

Compounding the problems the doomed flight faced, flight tracking site Flightradar24 also reported GPS spoofing and jamming were being used by Russia in the area, possibly accounting for why the plane went well out of its way when attempting to divert to Aktau.

"Flight-tracking service Flightradar24 said heavy GPS spoofing in the area, which tampers with signals so a plane’s position can’t be tracked, could have complicated any diversion."

If so, not only did Russia shoot the plane down, it also fatally interfered with its ability to reach a safe airport.  What a great bunch of guys.

Dozens Dead in Azerbaijan Airlines Plane Crash ‘Likely’ Caused by Russian Air Defenses - WSJ

Well color me wrong.  They may have actually hit it with an air-defense missile in the fog of a drone swarm.

 "They shot it down on purpose because Russians are Evil."

🙄 They probably shot it for the same reason that a US F/A-18 was recently shot down by USS Gettysburg in the Red Sea.  With so many targets in the air,  IFF system are on the edge of their technical ability to correctly identify what is a threat and what is not.  More than likely it was a friendly fire incident just like in the Red Sea.

Now you are inventing scenarios because... well, I have no idea why.

Nobody has said Russians are evil. I will say, however, that their military is underfunded and badly trained.

The old maxim of 'don't put down to malice what you can put down to incompetence' probably holds true here.

No speculation needed - they have form. Korean Air Lines Flight 007 in 1983, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in 2014, not to mention any number of military flights with Putins foes on board.

That seems to be gaining traction.

The unintended consequences of shooting at a drones.

Yan Matveyev, an independent Russian military expert, noted that images of the crashed plane’s tail reveal damage compatible with shrapnel from a small surface-to-air missiles, such as the Pantsyr-S1 air defence system.

“It looks like the tail section of the plane was damaged by some missile fragments,” he said.

Oh I’m sure they know what happened allready the aircraft flew for quite some time in a damaged condition.im sure the pilots were in contact with the maintenance facility as they struggled to remain in the air, passengers calling loved ones ect ect.first and foremost I’d like to offer my condolences to the bereaved and my deep respect to the crew trying to keep their damaged bird in the air.its an unfortunate tragedy in a war zone of Putin’s making he’s the one with blood on his hands.they will do their best to hide the truth no doubt about that whatsoever.

Maybe get off that high horse of yours for moment and accept that you aren't all knowing?

I certainly don't hate Russians. I lived and worked in east Russia for close to 9 years. I speak Russian and have many Russian friends. I consider the years that I spent there to be amongst the happiest of my life; the friends I have there are some of my closest.

So no, I don't hate Russia or Russians. Quite the opposite, in fact. But what I do hate is what Putin is doing to their country and their people.

Well said, RR....:clap2:

And Putin does not care how many innocent folk die in his quest for fame and personal goals.

Disagree, they won't hide it but blame Ukraine.

Agree, all respect to the crew

Speculation now that after realising their mistake, the Russian authorities ordered the plane to land across the Caspian Sea rather than at a nearby airport, in the hope it would crash into the sea, leaving behind no evidence of their crass stupidity.

The preliminary conclusions of the Azeri investigation into the crash show that a Russian Pantsir antiaircraft system hit the plane, after which Russian authorities diverted it from its airspace and had its GPS jammed, according to people briefed on the matter. Similar accounts have been leaked to Azeri and Western media in an attempt to boost pressure on Russia, said a person close to the Azeri government.

Russia shot the airliner with a missile.  Diverted the plane from Russian airspace and then jammed the GPS.

The info coming out that I heard yesterday was it's likely to be a bird strike, but the flight recorders may give more info. Whatever the cause, it behooves us to wait for those devices to be analysed before jumping into theories boots and all.

You need to find a better source for information;  one with the latest accurate information.

The plane's black box and flight recorder is being sent back to Brazil to be analyzed by the plane's manufacturer.

Those must have been some mighty sharp beaks on those birds to do so much peppered damage to the back end of the plane.

Given we don't yet know what caused that or the crash, I will not be rushing to judgement, but carry on with your assumptions by all means.

We know what caused the crash.  A Russian missile.
