Report Thai Transwoman Arrested at Border Claims She Was Deceived into Scam Operation

In a dramatic turn of events, a Thai transwoman and her boyfriend were arrested for illegal entry into Thailand from Cambodia, sparking a commotion at the Khlong Luek Border Checkpoint in Aranyaprathet, Sa Kaeo province. The incident unfolded on June 18 when the couple attempted to cross into Thailand without valid documents, amidst a border closure due to a land dispute.

 

Immigration officers detained them, suspecting involvement in a call centre scam notorious for defrauding victims. However, the transwoman fervently denied any wrongdoing, claiming that she had been deceived into travelling to Cambodia under false pretences. She pleaded with nearby journalists, fearing deportation might return her to the clutches of the criminals who manipulated her.

 

Phuttaapiwan “Phut” Ongphrabaramee, a Channel 8 news director, captured and shared the incident on social media. The footage showed the transwoman emotionally confronting police, exclaiming, “I was deceived into travelling to Cambodia... I don’t even have a phone battery,” while removing her wig in distress.

 

Assured by officers that they would adhere to legal protocols, the woman eventually calmed. She recounted a harrowing journey, beginning in Chiang Rai, where she and her boyfriend were promised legitimate administrative work by an employer who assured them the job in Cambodia was unrelated to any scams.

 

Upon arrival, their reality shifted dramatically. They were taken to a black building and confined in a yellow room teeming with other Thai nationals who had also been tricked. It became evident they were being coerced into joining a scam operation, a revelation that prompted the transwoman's desperate plan to escape.

 

In a bid for freedom, she shaved her head and fabricated a story about having terminal cancer, pleading for urgent medical treatment in Thailand. Her act convinced the gang to release her and stop holding them against their will. Abandoned at the Cambodian border, the couple fled across to the Thai side, driven by fears of a change of heart by their captors.

 

Now back in Thailand, they expressed willingness to undergo legal proceedings, indicating that incarceration in Thailand was preferable to the grim alternatives they faced in Cambodia. Their story has highlighted the exploitative tactics utilised by criminal gangs and underscores the vulnerabilities of individuals caught in such deceptive schemes.

 

Local authorities are now delving into the claims, aiming to address the complex issues surrounding victims of international fraud networks and human trafficking. This case serves as a stark reminder of the perils lurking for those unwittingly lured into criminal operations under the guise of legitimate work.
