Thailand's Gripen Jet Deal With Sweden Moves Forward

In a strategic move emphasising Thailand's defence capabilities, Air Force Chief ACM Panpakdee Pattanakul is set to head to Sweden later this month. His mission: to finalise the procurement of four additional Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets, an air force insider revealed today.

This acquisition marks the first instalment in a larger plan where Thailand aims to purchase a total of twelve of these multirole combat aircraft. During his upcoming visit to Stockholm, scheduled for 23rd to 27th August, ACM Panpakdee will formally ink the agreement. This move confirms Thailand's commitment to enhancing its aerial might, with the Gripens expected to be stationed at Wing 7 in Surat Thani, complementing the 11 currently deployed there.

The procurement, amounting to an estimated 60 billion Thai Baht, is part of a broader strategy to bolster national defence capabilities. The additional batches, each containing four jets, are planned for future acquisition. This expansion underlines Thailand's strategic focus on maintaining a robust and versatile air force.

Notably, the Gripen jets have already proved their mettle. They were successfully used by the Thai Air Force in real combat scenarios, notably during recent clashes along the northern border with Cambodia. In these operations, the Gripens, alongside F-16 Fighting Falcons, executed precision air strikes, reinforcing their value in the country's defence strategy.

Today's confirmation of ACM Panpakdee's travel plans to complete the purchase comes amidst earlier concerns. Speculation had arisen that Swedish Foreign Affairs Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard might delay the sale following observations of the aircraft in action during the Thai-Cambodian border tensions.

However, the Swedish government has the ultimate authority over this military hardware deal. They are required to consider any input from Minister Stenergard, who is awaiting a report from the Inspectorate of Strategic Products. This agency evaluates matters related to Sweden's military exports.

As the visit approaches, all eyes will be on Stockholm to see if this critical defence procurement will proceed smoothly. The decision will not only impact Thailand's military capabilities but also its diplomatic relations with Sweden and the broader region. Stay tuned for further developments as this pivotal deal unfolds.

Fantastic news, anything that any country can do to say NO to the United States at this point is a very wise decision. Trump must be stopped, his arrogant and ridiculous policies must be spurned, and America must realize that they're not as relevant as they used to be.

With friends like America and Trump, who needs enemies?

He is forcing a pivot towards other allies, and unfortunately he's forcing a pivot towards China too. Such ignorance on display.

Good on Thailand.
