Trump's Bold Bid: Talks with Putin and Zelensky on the Horizon

In a surprising twist, the US president has suggested that there is a "good chance" of a face-to-face summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This statement follows positive discussions that took place in Moscow between Trump’s envoy and Putin. While details remain scarce, the White House is optimistic about prospects for such a high-stakes meeting.

Positive Signals Emerge from Moscow

Trump described the discussions between his envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin as "very good". The Kremlin echoed this sentiment, calling the talks “constructive” and hinting at potential diplomatic breakthroughs. This dialogue occurs just days before a significant deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire or face new sanctions from the US.

The Push for Peace Intensifies

Ukrainian President Zelensky has been vocal about the need for peace, cautioning that Russia may only pursue serious negotiations if financial pressures increase. Trump's administration is prepared to intensify these pressures with substantial sanctions and possible secondary sanctions on countries that trade with Russia. Meanwhile, Trump has already implemented a 25% tariff on India for its oil trade with Russia, asserting strong economic stances in the international arena, reported the BBC.

A Challenging Path to Resolution

As anticipation builds for the proposed summit, expectations among observers remain tempered. Hostilities have not diminished, as Russian airstrikes continue to target Ukrainian cities. Despite Trump's initial claims that he could quickly end the conflict, peace remains elusive following several unsuccessful negotiation attempts. The White House confirmed $200 million in military support for Ukraine, underscoring ongoing international alliances amidst tensions.

The Bigger Picture

The potential summit and the ongoing discussions highlight the complex web of geopolitics that surrounds the conflict. Trump’s assertive diplomacy seeks to usher in a new phase in peace talks, with enormous consequences for international relations. While the path remains fraught with challenges, the dialogue continues to be a focal point on the global stage.

Let's hope the meeting goes ahead and something good comes out of it!

Maybe (and this is a big ‘maybe’) Trump will get Putin and Zelensky to talk to each other directly. But even if that happens, I don’t believe for a minute that Putin is willing  to make any concessions. Putin has made it very clear that he doesn’t care if he has to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of lives, or wreck the Russian economy. He’s not going to back down, because that would mean the end of him, probably quite literally.
Trump has been talking a big game about the Russia-Ukraine war, that he was going to end it on day one of his presidency, or even before he got inaugurated. So far, though, he has accomplished nothing, as is also the case with many other of Trump’s promises. Yet the MAGA rubes keep twisting their brains into pretzels so that they can keep believing Trump’s lies. It beggars belief.

Neither of them cares what Trump thinks or wants.

Translation : I'm gonna apply the umpteenth TACO on sanctions against Russia, which otherwise would take effect tomorrow

Trump and Zelensky have nothing to offer.

Therefore Putin can go on.

Imo wasted time to go there.

It has been 6 months late and 6 phone calls plus numerous deadlines, my expectation of Trump getting a peace deal and stopping the Ukraine war is rather weary. But he need all the distraction from Epstein

1-  Trump will try to browbeat Putin.

2-  Putin will respond that Trump would not even be president without Putin's help, which he has proof of, and is willing to release to the world, along with a bazillion pictures of Trump nude with various women.

3-  Trump will immediately shut up, and say (again) that Zelensky started the war and should immediately surrender.

Putin has power in negotiations in that Russia continues it's advance in the attritional war. Trump has power in that he has economic leaverage and could supply Ukraine with a hell of a lot of weapons be it air defence or long range missiles the latter being the biggest threat to Putin. Zelenkyy has no real power in this.

Nice try, but unfortunately it will probably be a waste of time.  I am sure Putin wants to keep the areas they have taken while Zelensky will not agree to any of that.  It really seems like a game and  just another Putin attempt to make Trump look like a failure.

Sad that what could be a glimmer of hope triggers the sufferes to attack Trump rather than hope there will be some movement to bring this war to an end. Zelensky is in a tight spot for sure. Zelensky is going to have to give ground to Putin but I can't see this happening. The further this war gets extended the more ground the Russians will take. There are now several cities in real danger of being taken and those are Kupiansk, Sloviansk, Kramtorsk, Kostiantynika, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk and Novpavlivka. I can't see Putin stopping until he gets the oblasts he wants. Trump is trying and no one can deny this but Zylenskyy is stubborn and Putin has the battlefield advantage. A glimmer of hope perhaps but it's just that. A glimmer.

Thanks for showing me that there are still a few normal folks left here.

You mean the weapons Trump sends to Ukraine and for which NATO has to pay?

Countries pledge millions to fund US weapons for Ukraine

European countries are promising to buy U.S. weapons to send to Kyiv.

Bold bid for the Nobel peace prize?

What a bloody joke!

Which he has done on many occasions, but poor old dumb Donny isn't smart enough to know that he has, and is being played!!

It bothers me that the world's media reports these talks as a discussion to end the war in Ukraine. There will be very little discussion on this point.

Trump is much more interested in self-enrichment, crypto, young girls, hotel and property deals, any dirt Putin has on him and flattering his own ego.

He should hold the meeting privately at Camp David similar to the way Priyut staged his coup. Let them go AFTER they make phone calls to stop all fighting. :stoner: Hell, burn ganja in the room with them to get things started.

You are correct there will be little to discuss as Russia has the upper hand and will dictate the terms of surrender.

Nobody cares what little Z thinks or wants. When did we start caring about dictators desires? Let the big dogs Trump and Putin try sorting this mess left by Obama Biden out. So sick of hearing Zelensky this, Zelensky that. Just call an election and get a legitimate leader. And before the hivemind starts bleating - would you be happy if DJT made himself dictator forever because technically the US is at war?

Not Obamas mess. He had nothing to do with it.

Not Trumps business because he works for Putin.

Zelensky is a legitimate leader, operating under the Ukrainian constitution.

There is no war in the US, except with ICE goons.

Because of Putin's excessive greed. Obama had nothing to do with it.

This meeting in Alaska is a farce.
