September 3, 2025Sep 3 A new review by Friends of the Earth Cymru suggests that tens of thousands of sites across Wales may contain hazardous waste but have not been properly assessed. Campaigners warn that this lack of scrutiny leaves both local communities and wildlife at risk of serious environmental harm. Although Wales has a long industrial legacy, official checks have been minimal. The report notes that only 82 sites have ever been formally investigated and confirmed as contaminated, meaning the real scale of the danger remains uncertain. Areas of concern include disused factories, landfills, and quarries, which may hold pollutants ranging from heavy metals and oil to solvents, gases, and even radioactive material. To uncover the extent of the problem, campaigners submitted freedom of information requests to all 22 local councils. Just 11 authorities provided full replies, yet even these showed 45,157 potentially polluted locations—indicating the overall number could be much higher.
