Nepal is reeling from intense social unrest led by Gen-Z protesters, leading to the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and leaving Kathmandu in turmoil. The protests, which started over the flashy lifestyles of elite 'Nepo Kids', resulted in the most severe unrest seen in Nepal for years, with 30 fatalities and over a thousand injured.

The demonstrations began with a peaceful protest in early September, driven by frustrations over economic disparity and youth unemployment. Tensions escalated after the government banned over two dozen social media platforms, prompting furious responses. Young Nepalis led a massive protest movement that quickly spiralled into chaos, seeing protests morph into violent clashes.

Nepal's youth unemployment was a staggering 20.8% in 2024, causing many to work abroad, making remittances crucial to the economy. The social media ban further provoked anger among young protesters relying on it for communication. As violence broke out, key sites like the parliament and Supreme Court were set ablaze, and protesters clashed violently with police using live ammunition and tear gas.

The unrest surged as government ministers resigned and international attention focused on the violence. Despite the turmoil, Gen-Z protesters distanced themselves from the looting and destruction, blaming opportunists. Oli's resignation was followed by an army plea for peace and dialogue, urging for restraint amidst the chaos.

President Ramchandra Paudel appealed for calm and potential talks, as former chief justice Sushila Karki became a prominent candidate for interim leadership. However, her appointment faces legal challenges. Protesters expressed a desire for new leadership with Gen-Z representation.

Looking ahead, the streets of Kathmandu remained tense and quiet under curfew. Future prospects are uncertain, with fears that peaceful protesters may face repercussions. The nation stands at a crossroads, grappling with recent upheaval and the need for significant change.
