Authorities have officially concluded search and rescue operations in Cebu following the recent earthquake, as all missing persons have been accounted for, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP). The discontinuation of search efforts was communicated on Wednesday night, signifying a shift towards relief and rehabilitation activities. The earthquake, which measured 6.9 in magnitude, resulted in the deaths of 72 individuals and left 294 people injured, affecting around 171,000 residents in Cebu and Central Visayas.

The region remains on red alert, with ongoing emphasis on relief and disaster response, as confirmed by PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randufl Tuaño. Over 2,250 police officers have been deployed from the Police Regional Office 7, supplemented by additional personnel from surrounding regions including Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, and Eastern Visayas. The deployments also include five speed boats from the Maritime Group to facilitate transportation and logistics.

Officials report that the primary focus now includes maintaining security, providing medical assistance, and clearing roads to aid the return to normalcy. The comprehensive disaster response aims to efficiently address the needs of affected communities while ensuring stability and safety in the region.

Expert analysis indicates that the rapid conclusion of search operations highlights the efficiency of local disaster response systems. However, the scale of the earthquake underscores the ongoing vulnerability of the region to natural disasters. Continuous support is crucial to ensure sustainable recovery and prevent future risks.

Looking forward, authorities will maintain high alert and continue to monitor affected areas closely. Relief efforts will be prioritized to support evacuees and repair infrastructure, with coordination across multiple regional agencies. As efforts shift to long-term recovery, government and community groups are expected to engage actively in rebuilding efforts.

Key Takeaways

  • Search operations in Cebu concluded; all missing now accounted for.
  • Focus shifts to relief and rehabilitation; 72 confirmed dead.
  • Central Visayas on red alert; over 2,250 officers deployed for aid.
