Ten women, including two minors, have been rescued from two brothels in central Cambodia following a coordinated police crackdown on suspected human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

The operation, carried out on the evening of 15 October in Kampong Thom province, targeted two establishments—“Happy Tide” and “Mlup Svay Ratha”—in Domrey That village. Led by Brigadier General Kang Koy of the Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Office, the raid was ordered by Major General Sar Thet, Commissioner-General of the National Police, and overseen by Major General Heng Sophal, Provincial Police Commissioner. Legal coordination was provided by Deputy Prosecutor Ms. Pich Moly.

Authorities arrested two suspects believed to be the owners of the brothels: Kong Sareth, 62, who operated under the karaoke brand “Chamnou Nhae,” and Mon Chantha, 41, linked to “Mlup Svay Ratha.” Both now face prosecution in the Kampong Thom Provincial Court.

The rescue adds to growing concerns over the exploitation of vulnerable women and children in Cambodia’s entertainment venues, many of which operate under the guise of karaoke bars. While the government has stepped up enforcement in recent years, rights groups warn that systemic corruption and weak oversight continue to enable trafficking networks.

The presence of minors among the victims underscores the urgency of reform. Cambodia remains a key transit and destination country for trafficking in Southeast Asia, with impoverished communities and porous borders making it fertile ground for exploitation.

Legal proceedings are underway, but advocates stress that dismantling such networks requires more than arrests—it demands sustained protection for survivors and accountability for those who profit from their suffering.
