Police in Phuket detained dozens of youths and seized modified motorbikes during late-night patrols to ensure safety at the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. The crackdown, which focused on the Saphan Hin area, led to 45 young people being detained and 13 illegally modified motorbikes seized. This operation started on the evening of October 22 and continued into the early hours of October 23.

Saphan Hin is known as a hotspot for youth gatherings, especially during the nine-day festival. Officers from both patrol and investigative units were present to prevent illegal street racing and noise pollution, which could disturb the festival's activities. Routine checks were conducted, resulting in the confiscation of modified bikes taken to the Phuket City Police Station for further examination.

These efforts are part of broader initiatives to maintain public safety during the religious and cultural event that draws large crowds. "The festival is an important time for Phuket. We’re making sure that everyone can attend and enjoy the celebrations without disruption or danger,” police stated, highlighting the importance of ensuring a peaceful environment.

Patrols will continue on a nightly basis throughout the festival, which includes street processions, ceremonies, and vegetarian food offerings. Police are working with other local agencies to monitor known trouble spots and prevent illegal activities, such as street racing, which is associated with motorbike modifications.

Under Thai law, such modifications are illegal if they result in excessive noise or compromise vehicle safety. The seized motorbikes will be inspected, and owners may face fines or further legal consequences depending on the violations. Authorities urged parents to monitor their children's activities and reminded attendees to respect the cultural and religious significance of the festival.

Key Takeaways

  • Police detained 45 youths and seized 13 modified motorbikes.
  • Night patrols are part of efforts to ensure festival safety.
  • Further inspections and legal actions are planned for seized vehicles.

The single easiest, most immediately attainable and effective action the Thai police could do for the mental health of Thai people is get these damned noisy motorcycles off the roads.

DO SOMETHING Thai police!  Just DO IT!

Only on special occasions then!

The cops should just take one of those mechanical machines that cube vehicles... and then toss them into it if the vehicle breaks the law. Be funny to see scooter boy's face and how he explains to mummy why his bike has be crushed into a tiny square of metale and plastic.
