US-China Trade Deal Framework Agreed Ahead of Leader Talks

The United States and China have established a framework for a potential trade deal, which will be discussed when President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping meet later this week. Scott Bessent, speaking to a US news outlet, also mentioned a "final deal" regarding TikTok's US operations and a delay in China's restrictions on rare earth minerals. He expressed confidence that the 100% tariff on Chinese goods would not be enforced, with China resuming significant soybean purchases from the US.

Amidst tensions between the two economic powerhouses, Trump and Xi are set to meet on Thursday in South Korea. Bessent met with senior Chinese trade officials during the Asean summit in Malaysia, where discussions were deemed "constructive." The two nations have agreed on a substantial framework to avoid escalating their trade conflict, with tariffs expected to be averted.

Trump's approach has involved imposing and threatening tariffs on imports to revitalise US manufacturing. Although many countries have agreed to new deals, China faced the steepest levies. In response to tightened restrictions on rare earth exports by China, Trump proposed a 100% tariff on Chinese goods. The trade in rare earths, critical for electronics production, became a key bargaining point. China agreed to delay tightening these controls for a year.

Soybeans have been another source of disagreement, with China halting orders, affecting US farmers. Bessent indicated this boycott might end soon, saying US farmers would benefit from the China deal. He projected a positive outlook for the upcoming and future seasons.

Trump and Xi are reportedly finalising a deal on TikTok's US operations on Thursday. The US has pursued control over TikTok’s US segment from parent company ByteDance due to security concerns. A deadline for selling TikTok's US operations, previously extended, now stands in December. The US aims for Americans to control the algorithm and board seats.

Additionally, trade deals with Malaysia and Cambodia have been announced, with frameworks set with Thailand and Vietnam.

Key Takeaways

  • The US and China agreed on a trade deal framework ahead of leader talks.
  • Trump's tariff plans are on hold with China resuming soybean purchases.
  • TikTok's US operations face a potential final deal soon.

First one what -- how can you sit well in imported Chinese chairs if they have 100% tariff?

This is the original Framework chair from Italy but there is most likely a Chinese knock-off.

Yup and those magga rubes just take the bait every time…sad

As far as I'm aware, this is the third framework announced by the US, but none of the previous ones, or the current one, has been confirmed or commented on by China.
