Thai Woman Dies in Fall from Poipet Building Amid Rising Concern

A 27-year-old Thai woman died yesterday morning after falling from the third floor of a building in Poipet, Cambodia, reigniting concerns over safety and transnational crime in the border town.

The incident occurred at 9:20 a.m. on 29 October at the Atwood Building in Kbal Koh Village. Witnesses reported hearing a loud crash before seeing the woman, dressed in a green hoodie and jeans, fall to the ground. Emergency services arrived swiftly, but she was pronounced dead before reaching hospital care.

The deceased was identified as Kanokwan Chaluaysaeng, known by her nickname “Baimon,” originally from Khon Kaen province in northeastern Thailand. A former neighbour, Patcharee Chomsri, confirmed her identity after seeing a photo of her ID card in news reports. Ms Chomsri recalled that Baimon had left her childhood home at age ten to live with her mother and had not returned since.

Local speculation suggests the woman may have taken her own life, with witnesses claiming she had been seen wandering the building since the previous night. However, authorities have yet to confirm the cause of death, and forensic experts are examining the body while efforts are underway to locate her family for funeral arrangements.

The building in question is reportedly linked to stock trading activities, and social media users have raised concerns about its history. A Facebook post by a user known as “Kor Khae Khon Thammada” claimed that several Thai nationals had died there previously, and investigations had yielded few results. He pledged to pursue answers in this latest case.

Fair Party MP Kannavee Suebsang also weighed in, urging the Thai government to intensify cooperation with Cambodia to combat transnational crime. He noted that this was not an isolated incident, referencing the death of a 31-year-old Thai man who fell from a Poipet building in January.

The recurrence of such tragedies has prompted calls for greater scrutiny of cross-border operations and the protection of Thai nationals working or residing in Cambodia. As investigations continue, pressure mounts on both governments to address the underlying issues and ensure accountability.
