Cambodia has launched its first shipment of dried mangoes to Australia, marking a milestone in a six-year trade agreement that signals deepening ties between the two nations. The 20-tonne consignment, sent by agribusiness firm Kirirom Food Production Co., Ltd. (KFP), is the first under a deal running from 2024 to 2030.

The export was facilitated by Australia’s CAPRED programme (Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development), which helped KFP meet Australian standards and forge business links. The mangoes are destined for major retailers across Australia, with future shipments expected to scale up.

Australian Ambassador Derek Yip hailed the move as a sign of growing regional cooperation. “It shows how targeted support and private sector partnerships can open up new markets and improve the competitiveness of Cambodia’s agri-food sector,” he said.

KFP’s Managing Director, Dalis Chhorn, said the deal benefits more than 1,700 employees—60% of them women—and boosts incomes for smallholder farmers. The company also operates Cambodia’s first mango purée production line, turning surplus and undersized fruit into purée and juice for domestic and export markets.

The mango shipment follows recent Cambodian exports of dried fruit, cashews, and milled rice to Australia. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached $1.1 billion in 2024, with Cambodian exports accounting for over 70% of the total.

This partnership aligns with Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, which aims to strengthen regional trade and investment. For Cambodia, it’s a chance to showcase its agricultural potential and diversify export markets beyond traditional partners.

As the mangoes arrive on Australian shelves, they carry more than tropical flavour—they represent a growing confidence in Cambodia’s agri-food sector and a shared commitment to sustainable trade.
