Thailand's Public Health Ministry has raised concerns over the nation's premature birth rate of 9.91%, which is considered high compared to global figures. On World Prematurity Day, Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat highlighted efforts by the ministry and partners to enhance monitoring and introduce measures aimed at reducing the rate to below 8%. Strategies include early detection, improved maternal care, and increased public awareness.

Late antenatal care and inadequate early pregnancy risk screening are significant contributors to premature births, according to the ministry. The lack of awareness about preterm labour dangers and signs worsens the problem. Efforts to educate expectant mothers, their families, and communities are crucial to mitigating these risks.

Dr. Amporn Benjapolpitak, Director-General of the Department of Health, described preterm birth as delivery before the 37th week of gestation. She advised pregnant women to be vigilant for symptoms like abdominal tightening, contractions, pelvic pressure, pain, and unusual discharge or bleeding, as these require immediate medical attention. Physical and emotional stress, along with demanding tasks and certain behaviours, can increase preterm labour risks.

The ministry's push for awareness also includes advising against actions such as frequent squatting, prolonged sitting or standing, excessive stair climbing, long-distance travel, and abdominal strain. Unclean bathing conditions and activities causing abdominal impact are also risk factors that need attention to prevent infections leading to early labour, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand's premature birth rate is 9.91%, above global averages.
  • Late antenatal care and insufficient awareness contribute significantly.
  • Efforts focus on education, better care, and preventive measures.
