Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Committee (PDPC) has ordered the suspension of TIDC Worldverse's iris scan verification services, following the discovery that personal data was exchanged for cryptocurrency. The company has been instructed to erase data collected from 1.2 million users to prevent potential illegal overseas transfers. This action is taken under the Personal Data Protection Act to safeguard against data breaches and unlawful use.

The PDPC found that the collection of biometric data in exchange for cryptocurrency violated legal standards. Reports revealed cases where individuals scanned their eyes for Worldcoin tokens and subsequently transferred the tokens to others. The Department of Special Investigation will further probe these activities. Tools For Humanity Thailand, operating under TIDC, has paused its verification services as ordered, claiming compliance with local laws and transparent communication with regulators.

Tools for Humanity (TFH) is developing a digital identity service called World ID, utilizing the Orb device to scan irises, creating unique biometric credentials. Participants in the scan receive Worldcoin tokens. The local suspension affects millions of Thais who used this technology for protection against scams and fraud. Despite the halt, TFH affirms its dedication to fostering a safe digital environment and intends to cooperate with Thai authorities.

A source linked to TFH, preferring anonymity, suggested that the PDPC consult data owners before ordering mass data deletion, highlighting that many benefited financially from the iris scanning. Users earned a total of 52 Worldcoin tokens, valued between 60 and 200 baht each. The deletion order, impacting 1.2 million users, could result in a financial loss of around one billion baht.

Dhiraphol Suwanprateep, an adjunct law lecturer, commented that this case underscores the importance of adhering to the PDPA. He mentioned that penalties by the PDPC are usually mild compared to more stringent fines in the EU, suggesting a need for stronger enforcement, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • PDPC halts iris scans over legal violations, impacting 1.2 million users.
  • The Department of Special Investigation to further scrutinize the case.
  • Tools For Humanity pledges continued cooperation with authorities.

That depends if there is only a committee assigned to the task or if a sub-committee and also an oversight committee are appointed too.

Just how dumb can people be?  Just when you think the limit is reached someone exceeds it.
