Southern Floods, Costs Hamper Father's Day Tourism Boom

Domestic tourism in Thailand is expected to face challenges during this week's Father's Day holiday, with 2.52 million trips projected by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). We anticipate that rising living costs, increased outbound trips, and severe flooding in the southern regions will impact travel plans.

The TAT governor, Thapanee Kiatphaibool, highlighted concerns over the economy, income stability, and high household debt, leading locals to be cautious about spending on tourism. This aligns with a survey from the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce's Center for Economic and Business Forecasting, which indicated a low tourism spending index of 73.0 in October, suggesting the current period is not ideal for travel spending.

Many Thais with the financial means are expected to travel abroad in December, taking advantage of long holidays. In 2024, an average of 48,400 Thais travelled overseas daily, and this number is expected to rise with the baht's appreciation. Popular destinations include countries within the Asia-Pacific region, such as Vietnam, China, Japan, and South Korea.

Recent severe flooding in southern Thailand, particularly in Hat Yai, Songkhla, has impeded tourism activities, with many attractions still requiring restoration. However, other parts of the country might see a boost to holiday sentiment due to cooler weather and government stimulus programs aimed at encouraging travel.

TAT forecasts domestic travel to generate 10.3 billion baht in revenue with an average occupancy rate of 68%. Key regions expected to see the most visitors include the central (612,700 trips), northeastern (526,800 trips), and eastern regions (516,500 trips). The eastern, northern, and central regions are projected to generate the highest tourism revenue.

Noteworthy provinces likely to attract visitors are Bangkok, Chon Buri, Kanchanaburi, Chiang Mai, and Nakhon Ratchasima, with second-tier cities like Suphan Buri, Udon Thani, Chiang Rai, Loei, and Nakhon Si Thammarat also on the list. According to the TCT's fourth-quarter survey, 56% of Thais plan to travel during the holiday, mostly staying within or near their home provinces.

Key Takeaways:

  • 2.52 million domestic trips are expected this Father's Day holiday.
  • High costs, outbound travel, and southern floods may dampen tourism.
  • Popular areas include Bangkok, Chon Buri, and Chiang Mai.
