Australia’s Child Safety Ban Questioned Over Gaming Platform Gap

Online gaming in Australia has been excluded from the new social media ban for under-16s, sparking concern among experts who view it as equally addictive. The ban, effective last Wednesday, restricts teens from registering accounts on platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and X, but it does not include popular gaming platforms such as Roblox and Discord. Critics fear gaming could similarly expose young users to harmful content and add to addiction problems.

Australia has launched its pioneering social media ban with the goal of protecting children from the dangers of cyberbullying, online grooming, and exposure to predatory algorithms. This decision, however, has raised questions due to the exclusion of gaming platforms. At the only public gaming disorder clinic in the country, child psychiatrist Dr Daniela Vecchio expresses surprise at the omission, pointing out the interconnectedness of gaming and social media.

As a reaction to the ban, authorities are actively monitoring platforms like Roblox and Discord due to concerns about harmful content. Roblox has updated its age verification features in response. Still, the platform's primary purpose, focused on content creation rather than interaction, led to its exclusion from the ban. Discord, on the other hand, recently implemented a "teen-by-default" setting for Australian users.

Looking forward, Australia's government claims the social media ban is a treatment plan, not a cure, affecting ongoing lists subject to review. The demand for clearer regulations has increased, with some experts arguing for a more nuanced approach that also encompasses gaming platforms. Attention is growing on these platforms to ensure safer spaces for children, paralleling a global movement for enhanced online safety measures, reported BBC.

They can play when they're 16. Why worry today? They aren't allowed to drive, to own guns, to drink, to smoke. It's not forever.
