A British national residing in Australia is facing deportation after having his visa cancelled for allegedly displaying Nazi symbols. The 43-year-old man, living in Queensland, was charged following accusations of using social media to post the Nazi swastika, promote pro-Nazi ideology, and incite violence against the Jewish community. He was placed in immigration detention in Brisbane and is expected in court in January, amidst a crackdown on prohibited symbols due to rising antisemitism and right-wing extremism.

The Australian Home Affairs Minister, Tony Burke, emphasised the zero-tolerance policy against hate symbols, stating that guests on visas have no room for hate in the country. Burke previously revoked the visa of another foreign national, Matthew Gruter from South Africa, for attending a neo-Nazi rally. Both individuals have the right to appeal the revocation, with the British man having the option to leave Australia voluntarily or face deportation.

Authorities are considering whether to delay deportation to allow the British man to attend court proceedings next month. Australia's recent tightening of hate crime laws includes mandatory jail terms for displaying hate symbols or performing Nazi salutes. The man's legal troubles began with investigations in October over alleged posts on the platform X, leading to account blocks and further social media activity.

Police seized devices and weapons, including swords with swastika symbols, from his home in Caboolture in November. He faces multiple charges, including three counts of displaying banned Nazi symbols and using the internet to offend. Stephen Nutt, Assistant Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police, stated the commitment to disrupt activities that threaten social cohesion and to prosecute offenders to protect community dignity and safety, reported the BBC.

Key Takeaways:

  • British national in Australia charged with displaying Nazi symbols faces deportation.
  • Tighter hate crime laws in Australia result in heavier penalties for such offences.
  • Both British and South African nationals involved in similar cases have options to appeal deportation.

As you obviously have no direct knowledge of the sacrifices Australia made to keeping you free;

-Approx. 40,000 Australians gave their lives in service with almost 10,000 KIA in the. European campaigns.

-23,000+ were wounded.

- Australian contributions to the North Atlantic corridor were critical for keeping  Great Britain alive as the personnel served onboard Canadian naval vessels and aircraft.

The scum who proudly display nazi symbols are disrespecting the Australians who sacrificed so much. I wouldn't expect you to have any sense of decency, but spare us your empty moralizing.

Big difference. A mistake by a stupid boy at a costume event. He was punished for this and has taken full responsibility. His was an act of stupidity, versus the other  person's intent to cause harm. Harry's family lost people in service. His grandfather ripped into him on this stupidity. And yet here you are to bring up a  kid's mistake to justify a vile nazi. Brilliant.

Your apparent support for this fascist and other dangerously armed far right loons in Australia is consistent with the “thoughts” of the resident AN apologists for far right thuggery.

Eh susanlea?

I'm not supporting anyone, apparently or otherwise, what i am doing is having a sense of humor, its wonderful.

You should try it sometime!😅

Just curious. Look at the first post (ie. the news article). The name of the South African guy is written there (in the second paragraph), while the name of the British guy is not.  I am not saying the names should or should not be written, but why the difference ??

Even X had blocked him because of the content of his posts.

That last one, "using the internet to offend". Is Aseannow blocked in Australia?
