At least 21 individuals have died, while dozens sustained injuries following a catastrophic collision involving two high-speed trains in southern Spain. The tragic accident occurred on Sunday evening near Adamuz, close to Cordoba. A train from Malaga bound for Madrid derailed, crashing onto an adjacent track, setting off a disastrous chain of events.

The accident also affected a second train travelling from Madrid to Huelva, which derailed as a result. Andalusian emergency services report that at least 25 individuals sustained severe injuries, while several others sustained minor injuries. An immediate suspension of all rail services between Madrid and Andalusia followed the accident.

Adif, the rail network operator, reported the crash shortly after the Malaga train departed the city at 18:40 local time (17:40 GMT). The private rail company, Iryo, which managed the Malaga to Madrid journey, confirmed the derailment and stated there were approximately 300 passengers on board. Eyewitness Salvador Jimenez from RTVE described the events, recalling the scene as resembling an earthquake and detailing the efforts of passengers to evacuate safely.

Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, assured the nation that the government is collaborating with emergency services to support those impacted. Meanwhile, Andalusian regional president Juanma Moreno conveyed his support and concern for the victims and their families during this challenging time, reported BBC.

Key Takeaways:

  • Two high-speed trains collided in southern Spain, resulting in five fatalities.

  • At least 25 people are seriously injured, with rail services in the region suspended.

  • The Prime Minister confirmed government collaboration with emergency services.

😳😥

Spain has more in common with Thailand than I thought.

Knowing how fast some of the European trains are that must have been quite an impact. I hope the injured recover quickly.
