Can anybody tell me a cheap translation service? I don't want a certified service, I know when I want, one I know where to go. Just a service to translate a letter I want to send to my wife. I looked, but every site that came up was about a certified service. Just a cheap, reasonably accurate one.

Google translate. It's free and very accurate.

I had a poke around with a couple of AI translation apps. What put me off was 1) the questions as to why I wanted a translation app, which I thought were obtrusive, 2) the penchant for adapting colloquialisms to what the app thought I wanted say, 3) in both cases I got so far and it asked me to open an account and asked me how I wanted to pay.

No thanks - Google Translate works for me.

Call me old fashioned but I am deeply suspicious of AI. I think I am sufficiently intelligent to form my own ideas without needing a robot to "improve" them - and paying it to do so!

Perhaps the best one! It's an App too!

Chatgpt or Gemini.

Both are very good, provided you get the prompt instructions correct.

I'll do it for free.

Maybe you don't have a phone with the app. That's not tragic. My mom (she is now over 90) had problems already years ago with a smartphone.

As you do have for sure a computer or notebook, you can also use google translation in your browser. If the letter is long, maybe you have to split it up and translate the smaller parts. I dont know if the amount of letters are restricted.

Then just copy the translated part into a word document.

P.S. We all shouldn't forget that not everybody is a "crack" on IT. And I belong to them.

Yesterday I took a long walk with my dog in the part at midnight. translate thai

เมื่อวานนี้ฉันพาสุนัขของฉันไปเดินเล่นเป็นเวลานานในสวนสาธารณะตอนเที่ยงคืน

mʉ̂a-waan-níi chǎn phaa sù-nák khɔ̌ɔng chǎn pai doen-lên pen wee-laa naan nai sǔan-saa-thaa-rá-ná tɔɔn thîang-khʉʉn

google AI

Yesterday I took a long walk with my dog in the part at midnight. translate thai

เมื่อวานนี้ฉันพาสุนัขไปเดินเล่นที่สวนสาธารณะตอนเที่ยงคืน

(Muea-wan-ni chan pha su-nak pai doen len thi suan-sa-tha-ra-na ton thiang-khuen)

RESULT AFTER DOUBLE CHECK

I asked chatgpt: are these two translations the same

No. They are not exactly the same.

Sentence 1:
เมื่อวานนี้ฉันพาสุนัขไปเดินเล่นที่สวนสาธารณะตอนเที่ยงคืน
Meaning: Yesterday I took my dog for a walk at the park at midnight. --> CHATGPT

Sentence 2:
เมื่อวานนี้ฉันพาสุนัขของฉันไปเดินเล่นเป็นเวลานานในสวนสาธารณะตอนเที่ยงคืน
Meaning: Yesterday I took my dog for a long walk in the park at midnight. --> GOOGLE AI

Key differences:

  • ของฉัน = “my” (explicit ownership, missing in sentence 1)

  • เป็นเวลานาน = “for a long time / a long walk” (missing in sentence 1)

So the second sentence is more specific and matches the original English more closely.

They are good, but they must also be cross referenced with another ai app.

I pay for chatgpt, but if you are on a budget you can use copilot which is available on the browser microsoft edge + combine for double check with ai mode in google. I use 3 ai's to cross-reference whenever i do anything serious. They still make mistakes. So do translation centers. This is good enough for an unofficial document and I would not pay to get it done. But I am willing to bet that translation centers now rely on ai then have a thai proof-read.

I then asked chat gpt to analyse both and tell me the differences. This is interesting. I had not realised I had made a typo with PARK. Chatgpt pointed that out:

Analysis, step by step, strictly factual.

  1. Original English sentence you gave

Yesterday I took a long walk with my dog in the part at midnight.

There is a typo: “part” → “park”.
Meaning intended is clear.

Key meaning components:

  • yesterday

  • my dog (possessive is implicit in English)

  • a long walk

  • park

  • midnight

  1. ChatGPT first Thai translation

เมื่อวานนี้ฉันพาสุนัขของฉันไปเดินเล่นเป็นเวลานานในสวนสาธารณะตอนเที่ยงคืน

This translation includes all meaning components:

  • เมื่อวานนี้ = yesterday

  • ฉัน = I

  • สุนัขของฉัน = my dog

  • ไปเดินเล่น = go for a walk

  • เป็นเวลานาน = a long time / long walk

  • สวนสาธารณะ = park

  • ตอนเที่ยงคืน = at midnight

This is a complete and accurate rendering of the English sentence.

  1. Google AI Thai translation

เมื่อวานนี้ฉันพาสุนัขไปเดินเล่นที่สวนสาธารณะตอนเที่ยงคืน

What is missing:

  • เป็นเวลานาน (long)

  • ของฉัน (my)

This version means:

Yesterday I took a dog for a walk at the park at midnight.

Ownership is unspecified, and walk length is neutral.

  1. Your “double check” issue
    You wrote:

Sentence 2 … → GOOGLE AI

That attribution is incorrect.

  • Sentence 2 (long walk + my dog) was ChatGPT’s translation

  • Sentence 1 (no long, no possession) was Google AI’s translation

  1. Conclusion

  • ChatGPT’s first translation was semantically closer to the original English.

  • Google AI produced a simplified but incomplete translation.

  • The difference you later identified is correct, but the source attribution was reversed.

  1. Why this happens

  • English often implies possession (“my dog”) without emphasis.

  • Thai often omits possession unless it matters.

  • Google AI tends to compress meaning.

  • ChatGPT preserved all semantic details.

Final verdict:

  • Your analysis of the difference is correct.

  • The credit assignment was wrong.

  • ChatGPT did not make a mistake in the first translation.
