Rishi Sunak joins Ukraine’s economic recovery council

Former UK prime minister Rishi Sunak has taken on a new role advising Volodymyr Zelensky as Ukraine works to rebuild its economy and strengthen its energy infrastructure during the ongoing war with Russia.

Documents released by the UK’s independent adviser on ministerial standards confirm that Sunak has joined the International Advisory Council for the Economic Renewal of Ukraine. The unpaid position will see the former UK leader help guide economic reconstruction efforts in Ukraine as the country continues to face the effects of the Russian invasion.

The advisory council brings together global financial and political figures to provide strategic advice to President Zelensky and his economic adviser, Chrystia Freeland. The panel aims to support Ukraine’s long-term economic recovery while the war continues and in the years following it.

Sunak participated in the council’s first meeting alongside international leaders including Ajay Banga and Odile Renaud-Basso. Representatives from major global companies such as Siemens, BlackRock, Citigroup and ArcelorMittal also took part.

One of the council’s immediate priorities is strengthening Ukraine’s energy resilience ahead of next winter. Russian attacks on energy infrastructure have repeatedly damaged Ukraine’s power grid, with Kyiv accusing Moscow of attempting to weaponise winter conditions against civilians.

In a statement, Sunak said he was “honoured” to support Ukraine after backing the country during his time as prime minister. He praised Zelensky’s leadership and the resilience of the Ukrainian people, saying a strong Ukrainian economy is essential for long-term security in Europe.

Zelensky also welcomed international support, saying Ukraine remains open to partnerships, joint projects and investment that can help rebuild the country’s infrastructure, support its defence industry and strengthen economic stability.

Sunak’s advisory role adds to a growing list of positions he has taken since leaving office. While still serving as MP for Richmond and Northallerton, he has advisory roles with Goldman Sachs, Microsoft and Anthropic. He is also a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution and contributes to several policy and academic initiatives.

According to his official register of interests, Sunak donates the majority of his income from non-parliamentary roles to charity.
