The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified security at major transportation hubs across Metro Manila and the country as travelers begin heading to their provinces for Holy Week. PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. confirmed that coordination has been enhanced with various agencies, including the Highway Patrol, Maritime, and Aviation Security Groups, to ensure the safety of passengers. The initiative, which began on March 29, aims to provide maximum security during this time of increased travel.

To manage the anticipated influx of travelers, security measures have been heightened at roads, churches, and transport facilities, coinciding with the heightened alert status initiated for Palm Sunday. Authorities expect a surge in travelers, with around 2.4 million heading to sea ports and approximately 1.3 million expected at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. PGEN Nartatez emphasized the importance of maintaining order while allowing for efficient movement during the holiday period.

Travelers are advised that security screenings will be thorough yet streamlined, and there will be Police Assistance Desks available for immediate support. President Marcos has highlighted a "whole-of-government" approach to ensure a peaceful Holy Week observation. The PNP is also preparing for an increase in private vehicle traffic on major roads, where road safety is a priority due to an expected rise in vehicular accidents during the long weekend.

Gen. Nartatez urged motorists to inspect their vehicles properly before embarking on journeys and reminded everyone that personal responsibility is crucial for safety. As preparations continue, authorities remain focused on facilitating a safe travel experience for millions of Filipinos during the Semana Santa.
