Four ways Iran could strike back if Trump targets Kharg Island

High-Stakes Gamble In The Gulf

Rising US military build-up in the Middle East has fuelled speculation that Donald Trump could order ground forces to seize Kharg Island — the strategic hub handling roughly 90% of Iran’s oil exports.

Such a move would mark a major escalation in the war with Iran — and almost certainly trigger a fierce and multi-layered retaliation.

Direct Attacks On US Forces

The most immediate threat would be direct strikes on American troops.

Kharg Island sits just off Iran’s coast, making it highly vulnerable to missile and drone fire from the mainland. Analysts warn Iranian forces would likely mount a دفاع-heavy response, using ambush tactics, explosives and entrenched positions to inflict casualties.

Even after sustained US-Israeli airstrikes, Iran retains enough capability to turn any landing into a costly fight — with the potential to drag US forces into a prolonged insurgency-style conflict.

Strikes On Gulf Energy Infrastructure

Iran could also widen the war by targeting oil and energy facilities across the Gulf.

Critical infrastructure — including refineries, power plants and desalination sites — would be prime targets. Tehran has already shown it can hit regional assets, and escalation here would send shockwaves through global markets.

With energy prices already volatile, further disruption could tighten Iran’s grip on the global economy.

Proxy Forces Unleashed

Tehran’s network of regional proxies remains one of its most potent weapons.

Groups such as Hezbollah, Iraqi militias and Yemen’s Houthis could intensify attacks on US bases, Gulf states and Israeli targets. Rocket fire, drone strikes and maritime disruption could surge across multiple fronts.

This would stretch US and allied forces, creating a wider conflict zone far beyond Iran itself.

Red Sea And Shipping Lanes Under Threat

Beyond the Strait of Hormuz, Iran could escalate by targeting another critical chokepoint — the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Through its Houthi allies, Tehran has already demonstrated the ability to disrupt shipping in the Red Sea. A renewed campaign could choke off another major global trade route, compounding economic pressure on the West.

A Conflict That Could Spiral Fast

Any US move on Kharg Island would not be a limited strike — it risks triggering a regional escalation with global consequences.

From direct battlefield clashes to economic warfare at sea, Iran’s playbook suggests one clear strategy: raise the cost of conflict until it becomes politically and economically unbearable.

A Kuwaiti tanker fully loaded with two million barrels of oil was set on fire while docked in Dubai after an Iranian drone strike, local authorities said, after President Donald Trump threatened to obliterate Iran’s energy sources.

The Dubai Media Office said that the Al Salmi tanker was struck by a drone and caught fire, raising fears of an oil spill in the Gulf port.

Officials said all 24 crew members were safe and that no oil had leaked from the vessel.

If they find and cut the global internet fiberoptic cables that are burried under the strait, that will put the world to a Stop for sure. A bit like the Ukrainians did the for the russian gas pipeline of Nordstream.
