Renewables save Europe €3bn as war-driven energy prices surge

Europe’s solar boom is softening the blow of a new energy shock triggered by the Middle East conflict, saving billions in fossil fuel imports as oil and gas prices spiral.

Analysis by SolarPower Europe shows solar power saved the EU more than €3 billion in March alone. The relief comes as the war involving Iran drives global fuel markets into turmoil.

With energy costs surging again, renewables are emerging as one of the few buffers between Europe and another economic crunch.

Oil and Gas Shock Ripples Across Europe

Benchmark Brent crude has jumped more than 50% since the conflict began, hitting €107 per barrel.

Meanwhile, the Dutch TTF natural gas has surged roughly 70%, putting March 2026 on track to mark the sharpest monthly jump in European gas prices since 2021.

Much of the surge is tied to the disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, which carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply.

Solar Emerges as Europe’s Financial Lifeline

Against that backdrop, solar generation has quietly delivered massive savings.

According to the analysis, solar electricity has cut Europe’s fossil fuel import bill by more than €100 million every day since 1 March. In the first 20 days of the month alone, the EU avoided roughly €2 billion in gas purchases.

Analysts say solar power reduced the total cost of meeting European energy demand by nearly a third during the period.

Spain’s Green Push Reshapes the Power Market

Several countries are already proving how renewables can blunt energy shocks.

Since 2019, Spain has doubled its wind and solar capacity, adding more than 40 gigawatts to its grid. Energy think tank Ember says that expansion has slashed the influence of fossil fuel plants on electricity prices by 75%.

By pushing cheaper renewable power onto the grid, Spain has sharply reduced the number of hours when gas sets the market price.

Wind Records Signal a Broader Shift

Elsewhere, renewables are also rewriting the energy map.

On 26 March, United Kingdom recorded a wind power peak of 23,880 megawatts — enough to supply roughly 23 million homes. During that surge, wind alone produced more than half of Britain’s electricity.

The message for policymakers is stark: expand clean energy fast — or remain exposed to the next geopolitical shock.
