Da Nang officials have proposed relocating nearly 400,000 graves in a major urban clearance effort, aiming to free land for a high-speed railway and modern coastal developments. This move follows a survey by the Da Nang Department of Construction identifying 394,470 graves for relocation. The plan targets areas between National Highway 1 and the coastline, with an urgent need for land due to the upcoming North-South high-speed railway.

Previously, over 67,000 graves were included in a relocation plan initiated in August 2025. However, a recent survey found more than 256 cemeteries with 1.4 million graves in an area spanning approximately 1,420 hectares. These sites are scattered among residential areas, posing environmental and public health risks, and complicating urban planning.

The relocation is crucial as the railway, set to begin construction by December 2026, will traverse more than 116 km of Da Nang, requiring 866 hectares of land. Authorities envisage that the land liberated from cemetery use will facilitate the development of green, smart coastal zones.

To manage reinterment, five new centralized cemeteries covering 437 hectares have been proposed in Da Nang's western region. Localities will gradually close down small cemeteries, moving graves westward, with planning to be completed by the second quarter of 2026 and relocation by 2030. Stricter measures will also be enforced to prevent unauthorized burials.

Da Nang to Relocate 400,000 Graves for High-Speed Rail Project .

If the dead and there family don't object that will be easy,

Make a couple properly marked Mass Graves , Saves a lot of land .

I think vietnam needs a quality high speed train service even more than Thailand. Spent 12 hours almost traveling from ninh binh to hue, which isn't so far. Train was dirty and run down full of people coughing and smoking. The Laos one done by the Chinese is in a different league.
