The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) strongly criticized the Diocese of Kalookan following its recent apology concerning an Easter Sunday event in Malabon City. During the event at the Diocesan Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, a dove was used as a prop by fastening its wings with cable ties, which PAWS claims caused the bird significant distress. PAWS argues that the Diocese's apology was insufficient as it addressed procedural concerns but ignored the immediate harm to the animal.

On April 8, the Diocese issued an apology, acknowledging the bird's use during the balloon release ceremony as part of the Virgin Mary unveiling. They insisted the practice was safer than involving a child. However, PAWS believes the act violates the Animal Welfare Act, or Republic Act 8485. This incident calls attention to the legal responsibilities concerning animal treatment in religious ceremonies.

Anna Cabrera, Executive Director of PAWS, emphasized the need for adhering to laws designed to prevent animal suffering. She warned that if such incidents reoccur, PAWS would initiate legal proceedings against the violators to ensure accountability. Cabrera highlighted the importance of recognizing animals' capacity to suffer, underscoring a moral obligation to prevent cruelty whenever possible.

Looking forward, scrutiny over traditional practices involving animals in ceremonies may increase, potentially prompting reforms. PAWS has urged the Church to align with animal welfare laws and adopt more compassionate alternatives in their rituals. The broader implications suggest a potential shift in how such events may be conducted in the future to better protect animal rights.
