Trump considering punishing 'reluctant' NATO allies

Mark Rutte and Marco Rubio

Donald Trump is weighing punitive action against NATO allies he believes failed to support the United States during the recent confrontation with Iran — a move that could redraw the alliance’s military footprint across Europe.

Administration officials say proposals under discussion include redeploying US troops away from “unhelpful” member states and shifting them to countries seen as more supportive. The plans have intensified fears that Washington’s commitment to the alliance is entering its most volatile phase in decades.

Allies in the Crosshairs

No countries have been formally named, but several NATO partners angered the White House during the crisis.

The United Kingdom refused to allow US forces to launch strikes from bases on its territory. Spain blocked American military aircraft from using its airspace, while Boris Pistorius, defence minister of Germany, publicly described the campaign as “not our war”.

Officials say those decisions are now being scrutinised as the administration considers reshaping troop deployments across the alliance.

Trump Escalates NATO Attacks

The tensions surfaced during a meeting between Trump and NATO secretary-general Mark Rutte in Washington.

Afterwards, Trump renewed his attacks on NATO, accusing allies of abandoning the US during the conflict. In a social media post, he claimed the alliance “wasn’t there when we needed them”.

The president has already floated a far more drastic step: withdrawing the United States entirely from NATO.

Legal Barriers — But Strategic Leverage

A full withdrawal is complicated by legislation passed in 2023 that prevents a president from leaving NATO without congressional approval. Ironically, the law was championed by Marco Rubio, now Trump’s secretary of state.

But Trump still holds powerful leverage. By signalling that the US might not defend certain allies, he could undermine the alliance’s core mutual-defence guarantee.

Diplomacy Under Pressure

Rutte, widely seen as one of the few European leaders able to manage Trump’s volatile relationship with NATO, described their meeting as “very frank”.

He acknowledged the president’s frustration but insisted most European allies had helped Washington during the crisis by providing military infrastructure and logistical support.

Alliance Faces a Moment of Reckoning

The clash comes as NATO grapples with multiple pressures: Russia’s war against Ukraine, rising defence spending demands and deepening transatlantic divisions.

For Trump, the Iran war has become a loyalty test. For NATO, the question now is whether the alliance can survive another round of brinkmanship from the partner it was built around.

Cutting off his nose to spite his face comes to mins!

Not all the "US" bases in NATO countries are there for NATO support!

RAF Fylingdales is just one example!

I think it's time for smart NATO allies to start punishing Trump, in whatever manner is available to them, and I think it's time for smart Americans to start punishing this grotesque man for his war crimes, and his ridiculous punishment of billions of people around the world.

He lost this war, he cost us countless billions, he destroyed lives, and he accomplished nothing, and for that he needs punishment.

Please remember this when Russia invades Europe. We will sit back and laugh. You Europeans made your bed, time to lie in it. This will be amusing

Bye, don't slam the door on your way out, and thanks for all your help in the last 80 years.

As it will be if the "Five Eyes" becomes only "one eye" system and the US has no non US land based satellite/missile tracking/spying intercept capabilities except for possibly some islands in the Pacific!

And please remember that projecting power requires allies, both in the form of forward based military assets and overflight. The US won't be able to project any farther than Canada.

Oh, and as intel cooperation stops, the US becomes much more vulnerable to a terrorist attack. Many potential attacks have been stopped because (now former) allies had better clandestine assets and penetrations than the US. That shared intel saved US Lives. There won't be a "next time", however, and when the US gets hammered by a suitcase nuke or something equally severe, the entire world will sit back and laugh at the US.

When your loved ones are vaporized, remember to thank the man who made it all possible: Donald J Trump.

We could always change allegiance to China.

A far more trustworthy country than the back stabbing USA.

Why would any country in Europe trust the US.

Yes, we were/are reliant on America, but Trump has proven he cannot be trusted. We need to increase are spending across all nations and finally be rid of the USA

If anyone has ever been in a position to start WW3 it is Donald Trump so why would NATO want to be aligned with him.

Russia's armed forces have been depleted by the invasion of Ukraine. What is Putin going to use to invade Europe.

Spain contributes little to NATO. Along with Portugal, it has been a parasite. The Belgians yap like little dogs. The USA can go to a bare bones operation in Bruxelles. Germany has relied on the US military bases as a deterrent to Russia. It needs those bases more now than ever. The USA can do what Canada did, close its German bases. The Germans can celebrate the closures and carry them over to welcome their Russian liberators when the Baltic states are seized.

And no the conflict has not cost you "billions". Are you a manufacturer dependent upon the Gulf oil or the Gulf oil based byproducts? A few dollars more at the gas pump will encourage you to be more respectful of Greta's plea to reduce your carbon footprint. Using less gas will help the planet.

Europe is a buffer that gets burned if Russia wants to go against the US. It also provides US with intelligence to lower terrorist threats in US, as well as buys a load of US manufactured military equipment. I don't think Russian army has the ability to take down Europe, they can't even overtake Ukraine. And if they tried to use nukes, Europe has them as well, and in that case we're all dead anyway.

Hence US bases in Europe are not there for protection of Europe, but for protection of the US and operations against US enemies that they could not achieve from their bases on US territory.

Unfortunately, for US weapons manufacturers, this spat is going to turn Europe towards their own military manufacturing capabilities, and away from American suppliers - severely harming one of rare US high valued exports.

If you think that's amusing, save this for later:

Im not sure China has the same adoration of muslims the Europeans have. Reminds of the queers for palestine movement. You guys will just have to learn common sense the old fashioned way ie trial by fire. Good luck with it all🤣

You know what Europe has no time for? Demented pedo rapist traitors. No time at all.

Trump is actually less popular in Europe than in the US!thumbsup

So when are you guys gonna get rid of him? Because he has to go. Staying on is not an option.

How to get rid of Hitler?

If you really want to hurt Trump the best way is to just ignore him.

Trump always has to be the centre of attraction ignore him and anything he says or his threats like he doesn't even exist and he would go mental.

I think after we get rid of Trump, the US will give this "military power projection" a rest. At least I hope so. We certainly could stand the rest -- and get out of this 'tripwire' situation we're in in Europe.

You will find and its been proven in the past then when we in England have our backs to the walll we come out fighting stronger we don't run away like the Yanks. I believe if it came to it NATO together would defeat Russia.

Amen. While most of us sane Yanks have thought Trump was a lunatic, many/most have agreed with him on NATO being an expensive non-asset to American security. Glad to hear some Euros are advocating for finally paying for their own defense.

How is Europe a buffer for the USA? Have you looked at a map? Russia is directly opposite of Alaska. It is Canada that is the dead space buffer. Canada's north is not well defended. If the Russians launch bombers and missiles, they will be flying over Canada, with some targeting Canadian cities, hydroelectric facilities, manufacturing plants and oil &gas facilities. If Europe is attacked it is because Europe is the target. Perhaps you missed the Norwegian /UK announcement. They caught Russian submarines in the act again.

You lost your little England. More resembles a cold version of Bangladesh or Pakistan these days. Once you smash social cohesion good luck putting together a viable army. Your msm will be rooting for the enemy just like US msm is 100% anti America. Sad times for western civilization thanks to "progressives" and their social engineering.

Meanwhile, the vibe in Europe is best expressed by these two Italians, who've become a viral sensation.😁

Putin cannot even win in Ukraine ,which is right next door ,but you been American

you might not know this 5555

regards Worgeordie

Trump 🤡 must not know that NATO is a defense organization,

not an aggressive one. He started this illegal war, now he expects

help after committing war crimes ,we would be as crazy as him

to join....and after he has done nothing but slag his allies off even

before he started the war.
