Iran crisis forces Europe’s reckoning — and a break from Trump

Europe’s uneasy response to the US-Israel war against Iran is fast becoming something larger: a strategic break with Washington under Donald Trump. A fragile ceasefire, secured only after Trump’s last-minute U-turn from threats to devastate Iran, has forced European leaders to confront a stark reality. The transatlantic alliance they long relied on is shifting beneath their feet.

What began as reluctant acquiescence is turning into something closer to strategic distance.

From Reluctant Support to Open Unease

In the early days of the crisis, most European governments offered tacit backing for the US-Israeli strike on Iran. Their instinct was to avoid another rupture with Washington after Trump’s threats over Greenland and his hard-line stance on Ukraine.

But unity never truly existed. NATO chief Mark Rutte publicly embraced Trump’s approach, while Spain’s prime minister Pedro Sánchez warned against escalation. Most capitals quietly sided with Washington, hoping the gamble would deliver a swift geopolitical win.

They misjudged both Trump and the war.

Reality Bites as the War Escalates

As the conflict intensified, Europe’s position hardened. Italy refused US warplanes access to a key Sicilian base. Poland declined to send Patriot air defence systems to the Middle East, citing the Russian threat. France denied overflight rights and blocked a US-backed UN resolution calling for military action to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

What once looked like Sánchez’s lonely dissent now resembles a broader European shift. The political mood has flipped: Trump, once indulged as an indispensable ally, is increasingly viewed as a destabilising force.

The Strategic Cost Europe Can’t Ignore

The war has delivered few benefits for Europe — but clear advantages for Moscow. Rising oil prices bolster Russian revenues, while Western air defence stockpiles are diverted from Ukraine.

Washington’s reported willingness to reroute weapons ordered by European allies to the Gulf has sharpened alarm in European capitals. Another economic shock, following Covid and the Ukraine war, looms over the continent.

For many leaders, the lesson is brutal but simple: the erosion of international law rarely ends well for Europe.

Trump Fatigue Spreads Across the Continent

Trump’s escalating rhetoric — from threats against Iran to repeated suggestions the US might abandon NATO — has begun to lose its shock value. European officials increasingly describe the effect as political numbness.

Even parts of the European far right are recalibrating. Italy’s Giorgia Meloni has quietly edged away from Trump’s war stance after a domestic political setback. Similar hesitation is emerging among Germany’s AfD and France’s Rassemblement National.

Only Hungary’s Viktor Orbán remains firmly aligned with Trump — a stance that may soon face its own electoral test.

A Chance for Europe to Lead Again

Out of crisis may come opportunity. European diplomats are quietly exploring a broader initiative to stabilise the Gulf, including a multinational effort to guarantee shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and revive nuclear negotiations with Iran.

The model echoes Europe’s opposition to the Iraq war two decades ago, when the continent attempted to reclaim diplomatic influence in the Middle East.

This time the stakes are even higher. Europe is discovering that its commitment to multilateralism is not simply moral — it is strategic.

And the Iran crisis may mark the moment when Europe finally begins to act on that realisation.

Iran is a turning point for Europe’s liberation – from Donald Trump

Makes me sick to think we jumped in headfirst into the Europe vs Russia war and when we could have used help dealing with rogue mullahs Europe just laughed and walked away.

Lessons learned. Europe is on its own. A woke continent infested by people that hate everything to do with Europe. Yeah, good luck with that.

Easy to forget, but for several years the forum left have been obsessing about their war against Russia with Nazi grand central Ukraine as proxy. Memories of goldfish or what😅

And what has that meaningless, as usual, statement got to do with the topic?

PS; Please don't bother responding with your usual MAGA nonsensense!
