Senate floats sweeping tax overhaul as debt pressure builds

Thailand’s Senate committee has proposed a broad tax reform package aimed at easing long-running fiscal strain and mounting public debt. One of the biggest ideas is lifting VAT from 7% to 10%, though that proposal already faces political resistance after being rejected earlier this year. The committee also suggested new taxes on stock trading, gold transactions, e-commerce sales and foreign digital firms, while calling for a global minimum tax by 2027. Other recommendations include higher taxes on unused land, wider signage levies, and the use of AI to improve tax collection. The package was framed as a response to a decade of budget deficits and fears that public debt could near or breach the legal ceiling later this decade.

Bet they agree to it now as the election is over as they couldn't announce that or agreee to it before a GE. All it will do is make things harder for the low/middle classes and increase dependence on the government... better to cut waste and fight corruption, as so much is frittered away on these two things. Yes, 10% VAT seems low, but we shouldn't be comparing it the the West, context matters.
